So far, we have covered Haryana, U.P, and Delhi Judicial Services. It’s time to move to Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand is one of the states that does not require judicial aspirants to know a specific state language, similar to U.P and Delhi. This is why aspirants prepare and attempt Uttarakhand Judicial Services Examination every year on a large scale.

About the Uttarakhand Judicial Services Examination
UKPCS(J) is similar to any other judicial examination in India. The exam is conducted for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) by the Public Service Commission under the supervision of the High Court of Uttarakhand every year.
Anyone who fulfils the eligibility criteria can apply.
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Examination Eligibility
- Candidates must not be more than 35 years of age. Aspirants belonging to categories other than general have a relaxation of 3 years.
- Candidates should either be practicing advocates or qualified to be registered as an Advocate under the Advocates Act, 1961.
- Stronghold of Hindi/Devnagri script is essential.
- Basic Knowledge of Computer operation.
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Vacancies 2021
For 2021, no official notification has been released yet regarding the number of vacancies. For 2019, a total of 15 vacancies were released. To get notified about UKPCS(J) vacancies you should check the official website of the High Court of Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Application Process and Fees
After the notification is released, candidates can go to the UKPSC site and fill the form online. Candidates will be required to upload their photos and signatures.
Every candidate needs to pay a prescribed application fee of Rs. 150 (Rs. 60 for SC/ST).
Also, take a print of the form for future reference.
Uttarakhand JudicialServices Exam Center
In Uttarakhand, there are three centers for the Prelims exams. These are Dehradun, Haldwani, and Haridwar. For Mains, only one center is allotted, that is in Haridwar.
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Exam Stages and Syllabus
In every Judicial Services, examination stages are the same. These are:
- Prelims
- Mains
- Interview
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Examination Prelims
It is a 3 hours objective/multiple choice type exam divided into two parts. Part-1 is of a maximum of 50 marks while Part-2 is for 150 marks. For every incorrect answer, 1/4th of the marks will be deducted.
Part 1: General Knowledge
- Day to day happenings in India and the world, particularly in the legal spheres.
- Questions based on International Law, Neutrality.
- Recent legislation pronouncements particularly Indian Constitutional Law and development and legal aspects but will not be confined to this only.
Part 2: Legal Subjects
- Transfer of Property Act
- Principles of Hindu Laws and Muslims Laws
- Evidence Act, 1872
- Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
- Indian Penal Code, 1860
- Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Mains Syllabus
The Present Day (150 Marks)
This paper is designed to test candidates’ knowledge of what is happening in India and the world, particularly in the legal spheres.
Candidates will be questioned on their power of expression in English. Questions will mainly come from Jurisprudence, International Law, Neutrality, recent legislations, particularly-Indian Constitutional Law and Developments, especially on their legal aspect and so on but will not be confined to them.
Credit will be given for substance and expression in answer. Marks will also be deducted for bad expression, including faults in grammar, misuse of words, etc.
Language (100 Marks)
A passage in English will be set and the candidate will be required to translate it into the ordinary language spoken in the courts, using the Devnagri script- (30 Marks)
Hindi to English passage translation- (30 Marks)
English Précis Writing- (40 Marks)
Law: Paper 1- Substantive Law (200 Marks)
The questions set will be restricted to the fields covered by:
- The law of Contracts
- The Law of Partnership
- Law concerning casements and torts
- Transfer of Property Act including the principle of equity especially applicable thereto
- The Principle of equity with special reference to the law of trust and specific relief
- Hindu and Mohammedan Law
Law: Paper-II- Evidence and Procedure
- Law of Evidence
- The Criminal Procedure Code
- Code of Civil Procedure
Law: Paper III Revenue and Criminal
- U.P Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act
- Indian Penal Code
Uttarakhand Judicial Services Viva-Voce (100 Marks)
Candidates who successfully clear both Prelims and Mains will be interviewed and quizzed on legal concepts, current affairs, and manner of speaking in this stage. Marks will be awarded based on clarity of thoughts and expression.
Questions can be of legal and nonlegal nature depending on the interviewer.
At the end, marks obtained in Viva and Mains will be calculated and a final merit list will be released mentioning the name of successful candidates.
Basic Knowledge of Computer Operation Practical Examination (100 Marks)
Questions will be based on:
- Microsoft Windows Operating System and Microsoft office
- Windows and Internet
- M.s- Word
- M.s Excel
- M.s- PowerPoint
A total of 1 hour will be allowed. Candidates will need to secure a minimum of 40 marks in this paper. It is only qualifying in nature.
This paper will be online and at the end printout of the paper will be taken for evaluation.
