About the Opportunity:

The University of Strathclyde Law School is pleased to welcome you to Glasgow for the 2018 instalment of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Annual Colloquium.

Technology and innovation are often heralded as a source of solutions to global environmental problems. There is no doubt that technology and innovation create opportunities, but they also pose challenges and carry risks.

This conference will explore the role of law and governance in better leveraging these opportunities, distributing the benefits that arise therefrom, and managing the associated challenges and risks.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts and papers must be written in English, complete with title, author(s)’s name(s), and institutional affiliation.

Abstracts should contain the aim of the paper, main points and a brief conclusion (400 words, maximum).

Abstracts should not contain tables, graphs, drawings, etc.

Mode of Submission: Entries are to be sent at  latest by February 1, 2018. The subject of the email should be “Abstract – 2018 IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium”.

Key Dates

Submission of abstracts deadline: February 1

Notification of abstract acceptance: March 1

Submission of draft paper: November 2018 (TBC)

Notification of whether the paper will be included in the edited collection stemming from the Colloquium: December 2018 (TBC)


We are pleased to be able to offer a full scholarship to a limited number of participants from low-income economies (click here for details).

If your organization is based in one of these countries and you wish to be considered for a scholarship please provide us by 01 February 2018 the following information via email (the subject of the email should be “Abstract / Scholarship – 2018 IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium”):

  • Abstract
  • A 2-page CV

The full scholarship will cover

  • Travel to and from Glasgow in economy class
  • Accommodation in Glasgow on University accommodation
  • Registration for the Colloquium

Successful scholars will be responsible for all other costs and arrangements including those relating to visas and travel/health insurance. Successful applicants will be notified by 01 March 2018.
