My Story

I was looking for an internship opportunity on Lawctopus when I saw a vacancy for 5th year interns at Trust Legal. I applied even though I was in the 4th year. What followed was a rejection mail stating that the vacancy is only for 5th year law students and that I did not qualify for the same.

I responded thanking them for the reply and requesting them to consider me for any opportunity as a 4th year law student. After this, I also filled the form available on their website given here.

After 4 days I got a call from the associate who asked me to come for an interview. I was interviewed by the managing partner himself who after a conversation about my studies and personality asked me to join from the next working day.

Duration in weeks. Days of work per week. Timings.

6 weeks. 6 days of work per week. 9:30 AM – 7:00 PM (Usually got a little late)

First impression, first day, formalities

My first impression of the firm was really positive as the associate I had interacted with had given me a good review and most importantly told me that I will get work as an intern.

On the first day just as I entered the office, the Managing Partner had called for a meeting of all the interns and associates; this was good opportunity to be introduced to the entire team at once. This meeting on the first day saved me from a lot of awkward introductions which after so many internships I had gotten used to.

On my first day I was given the work of making a short note on Arbitration proceedings in intellectual property disputes. The best part of making the note was that the associate read my note and discussed the nuances of it with me afterwards.

Main tasks

The tasks assigned to me were both legal and non-legal, I worked on the following:

  1. Assisted in drafting environmental law PIL filed in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India
  2. Research on various propositions of civil laws, media laws and intellectual property laws
  3. Prepared notes on Gaming Laws and Media Laws
  4. Prepared newsletters to be sent to clients
  5. Due diligence work for property
  6. Document classification
  7. Attending client meetings with the Managing partner

The associates are always conscious of giving you work but there might be days when there is a chill vibe in the office and there is less work.

Work environment, people

The work environment is balanced, it has the seriousness of a law office but the friendly associates make it very easy. Everyone is easy to approach but at times when there is a  lot of work pressure, the environment can get really work focused.

Apart from the work, it’s a place filled with really fun loving people from the Managing Partner to the associates. In my 6 weeks I attended two office parties and I was really made for feel like a part of the team.

I was in fact pleasantly surprised on how approachable the partners were especially Mr Sudhir Mishra, the Managing Partner who took the time to give me career and life advice in my interactions with him.

The best things AND the bad things

The best thing about Trust legal is without a doubt the people. You can expect more partner level interaction as compared to any other firm this size and the young associates really understand your position as they too are just a few years out of law school.

The bad part was that the work assigned can sometimes digress from pure legal work such as editing brochures. This though was not a lot and usually when you were assigned some work, there would also be some research handed to you.

Paid (Undisclosed)

Accommodation etc. What did you to do chill in and around the office and the place of stay?

I live nearby to the office so accommodation and travel was not an issue at all. There is Eros complex near the office where I usually went to eat McDonalds. Plus, Defense colony market close by has some really good eateries.
