Practical Skills, Pro Bono Projects

The School provides a wide range of opportunities to develop essential, transferable skills and improve your employability, through participation in national and international mooting contests, and through involvement in real world projects.

These include the Law School’s own pro bono projects: advising at the drop-in law clinic; giving advice on commercial law issues; reviewing miscarriages of justice, etc.

We also have partnership arrangements with charities such as Victim Support and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Teaching: The Sheffield Way

The teaching in the Sheffield LLM is seminar-based; you will be taught by experts in their fields, in small groups.

You will be given readings each week, and after an introductory overview, the seminar leader will lead discussions based around the reading.

This gives you familiarity with the law, as well as the policies which underlie it. It also trains you to structure your arguments and research in a logical manner.

Most modules are assessed by means of an essay.

At the end of the course, you will write a final dissertation under the supervision of an expert member of staff.

The fee for LLM is £15,250 per year. LLM is a one year course for full time students.

Application Process and Eligibility Process

The University requires that students take IELTS exam to prove proficiency in English, applicants need to achieve an overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

However if the medium of instruction for the undergraduate law degree is English this requirement may vary and it is best to contact the department and enquire about it.

To apply you would need to write a statement of purpose indicating why you want to pursue an LLM and what you aim to get out of the course.

You have to provide couple of references from people who know you, preferably one of them being a lecturer at the university where you have completed your LLB degree. You would also need to provide transcripts of your LLB degree.

Sheffield: A Great Studenty City!

But you are not just Britain’s finest universities. You are also choosing Sheffield, a city that’s the best in Britain for student life.

Our students have voted us top for social life for two consecutive years:
Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2015 (joint first for social life and community atmosphere)
Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2014 (first for social life)

You are choosing a city like no other. A city of stunning landscapes – the greenest in Europe, creative, welcoming, stubbornly independent, rich in culture and history, but with a modern outlook and a million things to see and do.

There’s all the buzz and stimulation of city life, but none of the stress. Instead there’s the friendly, laid-back feel of a village and some staggeringly beautiful scenery. In Sheffield you get the best of both worlds.

Part of it is that Sheffield is safer than other big cities – the UK Peace Index 2013, a study using Home Office data, found Sheffield to be England’s safest major city. It’s an easy-going and tolerant place to live, and local people welcome the contribution students make to life in the city.

In some cities people talk of ‘student ghettoes’. These are deprived areas of town where all the student housing is located. We don’t do that in Sheffield. We trust our students to live fully as part of the community. It means you’re fully immersed in the day-to-day life of this fine city. And it means you get to live in some really nice areas.

And as if all that isn’t good enough, the cost of living is less here than in just about every other university town in the UK.

There’s a pulsating grassroots creative arts community, a harmonious multicultural population, more parks and woodland than any other UK city, striking Victorian and modern architecture, big shopping at Meadowhall, small shopping at niche independent stores, the best pubs in Britain, dazzling public art, stylish restaurants, champion sport facilities, a legendary music scene, great cafes and coffee shops, secret parties, urban farms, Supertrams, seven hills, five rivers and two and a half million trees.
