‘Digital Courts Vision & Roadmap’ by E-Committee of SC; Submit Feedback on Civis; Attend Agami’s Townhall on April 13, 4.30 PM

Under the leadership of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud the Supreme Court eCommittee has for the first time opened up its draft Vision Document [click here] for public consultations!

And the last date for inputs is April 23, 2021.

The Supreme Court’s eCommittee looks to adopt technology to make the justice delivery system more efficient. Since 2004 in Phases I & II, it has undertaken measures to digitise the judicial system through the eCourts Project, including setting up the eCourts website, digitising and uploading daily orders, installing kiosks, and virtual courts for traffic offences.

Now, to truly open up the judicial system to technological possibilities such as real-time digital updation of case records, smart scheduling, customised dashboards and AI-enabled research tools and analytics the eCommittee is embarking on Phase III.

For this phase, the Vision Document presents a radically new approach, departing from the previous phases of hardware and software upgradation or development of solutions.

At the heart of this pivot, is the adoption of an ‘ecosystem approach, the building of open digital infrastructure, simplifying procedures, and a new governance framework (which includes the setting up of a Technology Office that will focus on design and architecture).

However, much like any change process, a move towards openness demands careful consideration of various factors including ensuring privacy, surveillance and security of data.

And today, with this public consultation, each of us has the extraordinary opportunity to participate in shaping the justice system that tomorrow’s lawyers will step into.

Agami had the honour of being an expert member of the drafting committee for the Vision Document and has partnered with CIVIS to source feedback from stakeholders.
