Personal Brands, Remote Working and the Future of Work

We have been hearing about the future of work and work from home for over a decade. We are seeing the COVID-19 threat nudging us into this tectonic shift – not by our choosing yet, but none-the-less. Everything is going virtual. Once the immediate impact of the virus dies down, what is our future going to look like? How will companies, jobs, and life look like?

The legal industry is better placed than any other to continue operating in such times – we are a ‘knowledge’ first business that can be virtualized with the technology available. This means that we can work from anywhere, and not just retain but also increase productivity. Digital courts, virtual consulting and service provision, e-filings are not a distant dream but already a reality of the world today. Most law firms anyway have systems in place that allow their employees to work from home or away from the office. This isn’t a simple case of ‘take your laptop and get going’ but the implementation of a well-crafted strategy to implement remote working. For them, this is not a business model concern, but one of business continuity.

Why is this relevant for law students and lawyers?

As lawyers, we are used to the idea of going to an office and working from there or going to colleges and studying. We know productivity can be enabled even without physical presence.

How do we translate this into our career plans?

What is key to set-up a remote working practice, whether as an employee or an entrepreneur, is to have systems in place that enable productivity, consistent leads (to generate work), and networking so that you are constantly in the news.

There is additional importance of developing a positive personal brand that people can recognize you with. People work with people they like. There is an added difficulty of creating a personal brand entirely virtually, but it starts with work in person. This is because people are left to judge your work on your responses in meetings, emails, phone call interactions, and what others say about you. Having a solid digital presence with a consistent personal brand acts as your CV – you are googled before you are paid. Make sure your personal brand is stellar and speaks for itself.

You want to ensure that as an employee or an entrepreneur, you do not get lost in the background, or be forgotten or overlooked. You have to navigate your career, become visible in the organization, build deep relationships and reach out for desirable projects and assignments, all while the rules of the game have changed!
