How Did You Apply
I came to know of an internship on Lawctopus. After which I applied directly to the official E-mail address of the firm: contact[at]blackrobeslegal.com
There is a selection process in place. You will be asked to answer certain questions on application of law in real life. If selected, then you will be informed through mail and then offered available time slots for doing the internship. Things to remember is that the organisation is very particular about discipline, commitment and a clear one-to-one communication process. Anonymity of each intern is maintained for reasons that will be explained to you subsequently.
On the first day, we were again given a week’s assignment based on which our internship was to be confirmed. All the instructions regarding the assignment were sent via e-mail and rest of the communications were done through WhatsApp. The answers to the questions had to be sent by return mail only. There were some tasks given also on WA and 24 hours were given for one to respond to it. The first week tasks had to be attempted without help. Once approved your internship is confirmed based on your sincerity and eagerness to learn even if the answers are not correct.
Apart from daily tasks on WA, there were 3 weekly tasks in all. Each week an assignment of 6 questions was given which included various tasks like providing a general opinion, giving legal opinion, drafting (RTI, Letters, Legal Notice), analysis & interpretation, article writing, research work. The assignments pertained to the most recent happenings in the country.
The quality of tasks given are varied and with each of them one is required to do some research or learn some drafting skill or give ones legal opinion. They are not direct questions. You are given supporting documents. The tasks are very diverse in their application and touch different Acts and aspects of the law. Deadlines are important to meet and rightly so.
The learning and growth that I experienced in my virtual internship has been most amazing and something which I have not experienced in any other internship. The reason for the difference is that I got to do actual lawyering instead of learning things theoretically. The internship made me realise that there are still miles to go and I am convinced more than before that this is the profession for me. The internship allows you to learn things which are not taught in a classroom and even during internships in big law firms. Punctuality in submissions is very important and an important characteristic of a lawyer to meet the deadlines come what may is instilled in you. The mentors at Black Robes Legal are very precise in their communication and submission requirements. You are provided with all details to enable you to attempt the questions for which you have to do research, learn drafting skills, read the attachments provided in detail and learn about the law in the different questions. Moreover, the weekly tasks become more and more challenging with each week and requires you to think, give your legal inputs while learning new things. The feed-back given is really good and fair. I thoroughly enjoyed the internship and made the most of it
