As we welcome the New Year with great enthusiasm and expectations, National Law University Delhi attempts to undertake a journey down an untrodden path as we bring you the first edition of our sports festival.
In its linguistic essence, Zafir is the Arabic word for ‘victorious’, and closely associates with the long-standing spirit of perseverance and dedication that NLU Delhi’s sports contingents have always truly believed in.
Zafir ’16 promises to witness jaw dropping levels of zeal, energy and enthusiasm as it collaborates with another exciting festival of the Delhi circuit – Kairos, the annual cultural festival of the University, which will be organized during the same weekend, i.e. from 4-6 March 2016.
Why should boys have all the fun?
At the outset, we reaffirm through Zafir our deeply held belief that participation and representation in the field of sports should never be dominated by members of a particular gender.
Zafir is our attempt to ensure an inclusive atmosphere where equal platforms would be provided for women to participate in all sports as equals to men.
In furtherance of this, we mark a move away from other similar competitions by opening up for women certain sports which have traditionally been dominated by men, such as Cricket, Long Jump, and Triple Jump, and hope to witness women turning up in large numbers in the respective sports stadia.
Now onto our attractions. We believe that every athlete deserves the best facilities to showcase her talents, and no sports event can claim to be complete without providing her with the same.
In furtherance of this spirit, we are proud to announce that Zafir will be organised at world-class venues in New Delhi that have earlier played hosts to the 9th Asian Games (1982) and the XIX Commonwealth Games (2010).
Within the bounds of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Talkatora Stadium, athletes will compete at the best of playgrounds, witnessing unmatchable exhilaration and spell-bounding aggression.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and its characteristic crown-shaped rooftop stands complimented by a 10-lane synthetic track, a 400-meter warm up track and a 2500-seat gymnasium forming part of the grand complex structure.
Not far away from the grand Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stands the marvelous Talkatora Stadium, visited most-frequently by national champions to the famous Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherji Swimming Complex and Talkatora Boxing Complex.
That’s not all.
Tired after a grueling day at the sports arena, our athletes would have the opportunity to revel in the experience of the eclectic ‘Pro-Nights’ organised as part of Kairos –evenings filled with enjoyment as one gets to witness performances of artists belonging to different genres and areas of the entertainment industry.
What’s more soothing than a soulful music evening, and more breathtaking than music pumping up a wide-open dance floor?
Yeh Dilli Hai Mere Yaar
And for those with a varied and excitable palate, Old Delhi is nothing short of a Foodie’s Valhalla with Chandni Chowk, Paranthe Wali Gali and Kareem’s offering delicacies found nowhere else.
The travel bugs in every contingentcan satiate themselves on monumental structures of great historic significance like the Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb.
Shopaholics can go on binges at Khan Market and Saket, while those with a spiritual propensity can visit the soothing structures of Akshardham Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Jama Masjid and Baha’i Lotus Temple.
The good news is that all these locations are connected via the Delhi Metro – with a station right at the doorstep of our University campus.
Overall, Zafir promises to be an event that will remain etched in your hearts and calendars for years to come. Join us as we create indelible memories, indomitable champions and an unparalleled festive experience!
