The National Law University, Delhi (‘University’) is seeking to engage, on a contractual basis, one Associate (Litigation) who will work full time in the capacity of a Consultantadvocatefor the Centre on the Death Penalty at its campus in Dwarka, New Delhi.
The contract will be for one year initially and can be extended at the discretion of the University.
About the Centre on the Death Penalty
The Centre was set up in August 2014 and undertakes litigation, research and outreach relating to the death penalty. The Centre was formed following the Death Penalty Research Project (‘the Project’) undertaken by the University since July 2013 which culminated in the Death Penalty India Report, 2016.
Recently, the Centre published ‘Matters of Judgement,’ a report analysing the views of 60 former Supreme Court judges on the criminal justice system and the death penalty, and the Centre also published its annual statistics report on the death penalty for the year 2017.
Currently, the Centre has 17 full-time associates in litigation, research and public affairs in addition to three administrative staff and the Director of the Centre. (For more details, visit this site)
About the litigation initiative
The Centre provides pro bono legal assistance to several prisoners sentenced to death across the country. The Centre also represents prisoners who are challenging the rejection of their mercy petitions by the Governor or the President.
Additionally, the Centre is involved in strategic litigation aimed at challenging procedural and substantive aspects of the criminal justice system for the realization of constitutional rights of prisoners sentenced to death.
Currently, the Centre has a team of five litigators and two mitigation investigators. Litigation associates of the Centre brief eminent senior advocates or experienced criminal defense advocates in the Supreme Court and High Courts. Since 2015, the Centre has been involved in several Criminal Appeals, Review Petitions and Writ Petitions before various judicial fora.
Draft criminal appeals, review petitions, writ petitions, applications, rejoinders, mercy petitions and other legal documents.
Brief and assist senior advocates and advocates on record.
Devise legal strategy and arguments for cases handled by the Centre and carry out related research.
Visit prisons across India to conduct detailed interviews with prisoners sentenced to death, their families as part of developing legal strategy in particular cases.
Regularly communicate with prison authorities to obtain case specific information and documents.
Present the work of the Centre at appropriate fora.
Organise training workshops and conferences.
Any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of the Centre.
Graduate with an LLB degree.
Enrolment with any State Bar Council.
Those with full-time litigation experience of two years or more will be given preference.
Ability to read/ write/ speak Indian languages will be an advantage but is not mandatory.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be within the range of Rs. 50,000-Rs.60,000/- per month.

The Centre works on behalf of all prisoners sentenced to death, regardless of the offence involved.
