Concept
Marrakesh Treaty is WIPO’s 25th treaty and was signed on June 27th, 2013.
India’s persistence has been instrumental in the process bringing the treaty that focuses on rights of Blind, Visually Impaired, or otherwise Print Disabled Persons in respect of access to knowledge.
India’s commitment to this important issue is evident from the fact that even before the treaty was adapted, provisions benefiting persons with disability was incorporated in the Indian Copyright Act by 2012 Copyright (Amendment) Act.
India became the first country to ratify this treaty that is built on humanitarian grounds.
Aim
The underlying purpose of Intellectual Property Regime is Dissemination of Information and the aim of this conference is to assess the progress of copyright law as a means to that end.
In this conference we wish to examine Marrakesh Treaty provisions, Copyright Act provisions and their implications on the stakeholders—copyright owners, publishing industry, beneficiaries, and others—in India.
Experts in copyright law, representatives from publishing industry, representatives from Association of Blind, representatives from developers of compatible software’s, advocates, academicians and other stakeholders will be participating.
