Do you know how to draft a smart contract?
How do you become a successful cyber litigator?
What do you need to know to protect a proprietary product?
I have been a media lawyer for almost half a decade, but I do not want to be limited to the media and entertainment industry. I want to gain experience and expertise across industries. Recently, while researching for work, I came across smart contracts and block chains and was intrigued. In connection to my work, I was lucky to have come across industry experts. So I reached out to a few of them, to know how does one establish themselves in the technology industry.
They all recommended me to gain specific skills like drafting technology and commercial contracts or go in with a solid reference. Now, I have been poor in terms of networking, so getting a solid reference was not cards for me. My only option was to gain the expertise in the subject matter. I started doing the free online courses available on the internet. While they did give me a basic understanding of the subject matter, I needed something more if I wanted to land a job in the technology industry.
Personally, I must have applied for countless jobs across the industry, through job portals, emails and the likes. But what I realised is that there are countless applicants out there and my application is just part of a huge pile. For a candidate to stand out from the rest, they need more than a mere certificate or diploma on their resume. They need to showcase their in-depth knowledge of the industry and subject matter.
I looked up online about what all one should know and do to improve their expertise in this area. There were books, short certificate courses in both law and technology. I checked out their syllabus and was underwhelmed. Students need a thorough understanding of the subject with practical applications. As a student, one needs something better and comprehensive than a certificate course for cyber laws. But for a working professional, learning has to be flexible enough for them to earn and learn at the same time.
