Law Schools Review: Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar

Name of the Institute : Gujarat National Law University

Location: Gandhinagar, Gujarat

Spread in over 50 acres of land, GNLU boasts of one of the largest campuses out of all the National Law Universities.

The classrooms, library and the administrative building are fully air-conditioned,sadly the hostels are not 🙁

However, GNLU hostels offer the rare luxury of single occupancy rooms and attached washrooms (But only for girls).

There is a common gym and a separate gym in the Girls hostel. There is a 24 hour hot water supply And  there are absolutely no power-cuts, one of the specialities of Gujjuland.

The food is decent, with meals served four times a day and a separate night mess which is functional till 1 am for your late night hunger pangs. And yes! we get chicken once a week and eggs EVERY DAY!

The wifi access is great and UNLIMITED! Library is well equipped and we have subscription to manupatra, scconline, westlaw etc.

Since a lot of construction work is still going on in the campus and the boundaries are not fenced yet, a lot of street dogs are present something which I totally hate.

Although efforts are taken to drive them away, they come back ALWAYS! During the rainy seasons, insects and lizards are a common sight and eventually we learn to live with them 😛

Faculty and Academics:

The class timings are brilliant, 8:30 am-1: 30 pm and you are free for the rest of the day! But students choose to engage in Certificate courses, clubs, committee and other work which keeps them busy throughout the day.

The faculty is decent, if not too great for a National Law University, however they are extremely approachable and clear all your doubts at the drop of a hat.

The evaluation methodology comprises of 50( 30+20) for internals and 50 marks for end semesters, hence there isn’t much academic burden on the students as a result of which everyone engages in a lot of other activities. The fee charged is decent enough for the facilities we are provided with.

The course structure is average, with five streams (B.A, B.Com, B.SW, BBA. and B.Sc.) LLB options to students there is a disparity in marks as some streams are more scoring than others.

Also there is compulsory foreign language class for the first three semester which is extremely unnecessary and adds absolutely no value.

Student culture and Activities

Your identity in GNLU depends on the number of committees and the clubs that you are a part of. Academics do matter, but co-circulars rule the roast.

Since it a research based university, there are several centers headed by faculty members which encourage student research on various issues of law.

GNLU happens to be one of the first universities in the country which has a center on Sports Law in India and another one on Law and Economics.

There are dozens of committees prominent among them are the Students Activity Committee which organizes the college fest and other cultural activities, The Moot Court Committee which is known for its flagship event the GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC) which witnesses participation from national as well as international teams, The Legal Services Committee which provides a platform for students to carry out their socio-legal pursuits through their activities, The Sports Committee which is known for the national sports fest “Justice League”.

There is a debating society, a dance club, music club and a theatre club.

GNLU also has an in-house magazine, the “Jury’s Out” which is does some really “cool” stuff.

The location isn’t bad if not great! At the first instance you may feel like you are stranded from the world, but you end up discovering your own get-aways!

Gujju fondness for food comes in the form of a plethora of eateries( of all shapes, sizes and fitting all pockets)

Some of them are quite close and a convenient escape from the mess food which gets monotonous at times. And yes Non veg is available in most of the places!

For Shopping enthusiasts, Gandhinagar has not much to offer but Ahmedabad isn’t too far either.

Otherwise there are movie theaters, coffee houses and other hang-out joints quite closeby. Gujarat being, a dry state Pubs and Bars do not find any EXISTENCE 😛

Transportation is however expensive.

The College placement graph has been going up in the past few years. the College has a dedicated Placement Committee which is extremely involved in securing the best internships and Jobs for the Students.

There are regular guidance sessions conducted for students who want to pursue higher education or appear for the civil services.

Though the college provides a good network of internship opportunities, most students prefer to use their own contacts to secure internships.

Administration and Fees

Curfew timings are 9:30 pm for both boys and girls. However students are free to roam inside the campus till 1 am in the night as the Night mess is functional!

The administration is lazy in certain departments.

The faculty members are in charge of redressing our complains and leave no stone upturned in doing the same.
