How big was the office? Team strength?
It’s a huge sprawling building right next to the Kolkata High Court. It consisted of around 30 senior associates, and 10 partners and senior partners.
The Corporate division was on the ground floor, the IPR on the first floor and the rest of it on the second floor.
Application procedure. Internship contact details
I procured the Khaitan Kolkata internship through a contact. But there are other options available, where you can contact the firm via email available at their website homepage.
Accommodation: how, where, how was it?
I was staying with my relatives at Dumdum right next to the metro station.
So there was no problem related to conveyance. I got down at the Chandini Chowk Metro Station and the firm was 10 minutes walking distance from the station.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
R N Jhunjhunwala is the senior partner who selects students for internship. On the first day, all the interns need to meet Jeevan Sir, who is the internship Co-coordinator at Khaitan.
He allotted me a team to work with within couple of hours and I started getting good work from the first day itself.
I got research work on diverse areas of company law, family law, IPR etc. Besides this, I prepared a due-diligence report and checked the required compliances of some of the clients of Khaitan.
I was asked to write a few articles on various concepts of jurisprudence for the Senior Associate wanted to judge my depth on important concepts of law.
I also got few drafting work on the winding up applications of a client of Khaitan.
Work environment, people
People at Khaitan, Kolkata were very warm and cordial. They have a very good work culture out there. The senior associates never hesitated in making us understand legal issues/problems when it was difficult for us to comprehend it.
There wasn’t a single day at my Khaitan Kolkata internship when I had no work to do. They have a huge library and all the interns have access to the books and journals.
Besides this, the food around the place was quite decent and cheap. Timings were flexible. They don’t make you stay for long if you have no work. They serve free tea/lemon tea/coffee twice a day.
The only bad thing about big firms is that there are a number of co-interns and the work that you do doesn’t get noticed easily, no matter how good you are.
Besides this, I was hospitalized for a day by consuming outside food almost every day. This was really an awful experience when you get ill during your internships.
What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues
I had this amazing group of co-interns in Khaitan and we often used to chill out in the Café Coffee Day which is just 2 minutes walking distance from the firm.
Besides this, attending functions in the High Court Auditorium was fun too.
One of the best thing I loved about Khaitan, Kolkata is that they provide stipend of rupees 1000 per week.
Anything else you’d like to tell; Biggest lessons
Do not take any internship for granted.
Explore all opportunities available to you. Try building good relations. And yes, work hard in your internships for they can help you learn things which otherwise is not possible to learn in Law Schools.
