Independent Thought [iThought] is a National Human Rights organization working towards equity, justice and mutual respect.
We work on human right and law through direct Intervention, Advocacy and Judicial actions and provide technical and hand-holding support to non government, government and multilateral Funding, Policy, Research and Grassroots organizations in several states of India.
We take this opportunity to inform about Independent Thought National Legal Essay Competition. Independent
Thought organizes an annual Essay Competition for law and human rights students across the country. We take up the relevant debates around law and children every year.
During the years the topics of essay were:
Mental Health – Locating Rights of Children (2016); Does Child Labour in homes dilute a child right to education (2015); Sexual offences within prohibited child marriages (2014); Age of Criminal Responsibility (2013) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (2012).
We have published the first three years best essays as annual law digests (ISBN publications).

We take up pro-bono Social Action Litigations for the rights of children and also provide support to other organizations.
o Ongoing PIL – Independent Thought vs. Union of India [W.P. (C) 4678 of 2016 in Hon’ble High Court of Delhi] seeking for the issuance of necessary and appropriate guidelines for performance of Caesarian section operations to safeguard the reproductive health rights of women and children in India.
This PIL pertains to the fundamental right to health of women and children in India and that absence of such guidelines is leading to violation of reproductive health rights. Click HERE.
o Ongoing PIL – Independent Thought vs. Union of India (W.P. Civil 382 of 2013) before Supreme Court of India; for declaration of Exception 2 to Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, allowing martial rape within child marriages as unconstitutional. Click HERE.
o Ongoing PIL, Independent Thought vs. Union of India [WP Civil 8763 of 2015] before Delhi High Court; for declaration that exclusion of Government Schools under Section 18(1), Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) exempting adherence of norms and standards and obtain a certificate of recognition asUnconstitutional. o Ongoing PIL, NGO Matri Sudha has approached the Honorable High Court of Delhi by way of Writ Petition under Article 226 of the Constitution through Advocate Vikram Srivastava for Constitution of State Food Commission as required under the National Food Security Act, 2013 and effective implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013, to secure the well-being, good health and safety of children attending Anganwadi Centers and Schools of Delhi, by ensuring access to adequate food and nutritional security.
