Duration of internship and timings

I have interned at Suri and Co from the 15th of May, 2015 to 15th of June, 2015. A minimum of three weeks of internship is mandatory.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

They have a good library, proper access to e-journals and Manupatra, Westlaw and SCC access and the rest of the required electronic paraphernalia. The first day was all about introductions to the Associates present and the firm manager and I was asked questions mostly based on what I had written in my CV.

Main tasks

Work in the office was mostly related to Electricity Act, 2003. Research of relevant case laws on Tariff on Electricity on Renewable Energy. Cases on co-generation were extensively discussed.

I was asked to find precedents on cases related to Foreign Trade Act, 1992 and Income Tax Act.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 matters were also an important segment of work.

Orissa Survey Settlement Act,1958 was dealt with.

Arbitration and Conciliation Act,1996 consisted a huge chunk of my work.

Articles had to be written up on matters related to Foreign Exchange Management Regulations, 2000.

Brief on agro allied industries had to be made.

Notes on the the procedure of incorporation of a company. Formation requirements of the limited liability partnership firms.

Notes on the nature of the preference shares and the rights of the preference share holders. Procedure of registration of companies with charitable purposes.

I was also taught how to draft a PIL and Concession Agreements. Summary on the Utkal Chamber of Commerce objection statements and objections against review petitions.

Work environment and people

Office ambiance is extremely friendly, good natured and helpful but they are very particular about punctuality and getting work done within the allotted deadline. High level of competence and work efficiency is demanded. One needs to be computer savvy.

There were occasional staff lunches which provided a necessary relief from work. Even though work levels are stressful yet the work atmosphere is easy and without friction.

Best things

They offer internships to one intern at a time, so they dedicate a lot of attention to each intern providing ample scope of learning for the student. The Associates present will also during the non-working hours discuss pertinent legal topics and issues which helps in valuable knowledge assimilation.

Further if you show interest they will also guide you through new avenues of corporate law that are branching out gradually. They will also provide you with advise related to academics.

I was kept constantly busy with work. There was no idle time. I received the exact feel of working in a law firm from my experience in Suri.

Bad things

The bad thing is since it is a new branch that has opened in Bhubaneswar, the number of Associates is less than expected numbers. So the work load is excessive. Further you will be asked to put in extra hours of work in case there is extra work load on any particular day.

Many at times I took work back home in order to meet the assigned deadlines. You also be asked to submit work in a very short notice and that made things very hectic.

No stipend.

Biggest Lessons

In my chosen field it’s a positive murder of your career if you choose to be average. Suri taught me to think out of the box. To dedicate as many hours possible to work and to attend as many lectures or seminars as possible on the recent changes in the corporate laws in order to keep yourself up to to date.

If I had time to spare then I was advised to go through recent rulings and judgments and maintain a record of all my work there in the he firm for quick reference in the future.

Any Other Thing

Uniform is not compulsory. You may work wearing the usual black trousers and white shirts or with western formals.

Overall Rating

Since I’m a resident of Bhubaneswar, there was no requirement to find any other accommodations. However non-resident students can easily find decent lodgings at Satya Nagar or Shahid Nagar which is very close to the office.

Office Timings

Office timings are from 9 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening.
