The Experience

My internship experience proved to be valuable in terms of exposure and knowledge.

First and foremost this experience has affected me in ways I did not foresee. As with most experiences in life things do not go usually as planned, but always end up leaving you with something good and worthwhile (and often better than what you had anticipated.)

At first I was slightly frustrated and disappointed that the mandate and working conditions would not be that of what I had expected (those of which the interns before me had and of which I thought I applied for), but I can see that in many ways this discrepancy turned into a wonderful and unique experience which opened my eyes to new opportunities and positively changed my ambitions for the future.

As well as working on an evaluation of the ‘Human Tribal Rights Program’ I helping prepared for an upcoming campaign. Working on both of these assignments has encouraged me to pursue a Masters in Human rights.

Although this is not a new education and career path, which I had never considered before, working on these assignments, had allowed me to closely reflect on such an option and realize that it is something I am truly called to.

It is funny how sometimes just what you were looking for all along was actually lying right in front of you the whole time, yet it takes certain something to help you see it in a new light.

This experience changed my worries about my capabilities into beliefs about what I can and will do when I begin my career.

My internship has definitely given me a better understanding of my skill set and where my career may take me, but most importantly, I’ve come to learn that I am not alone. This internship has taught me that almost everybody is in the same position.

This being my first position in an office atmosphere, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. The environment was quite relaxed, yet it taught me how to behave in a workplace.

Just observing the everyday events taught me more about teamwork, and how people can come together to get things done.

Like I said, this internship improved my skills a ton, both off paper and on paper. I didn’t realize it all this time, but this experience served not only as a positive learning experience, but a resume builder as well.

I would like to conclude this by saying that this has truly been a great learning experience and I’ll be forever indebted to those who gave me a hand there.

My advice: As far as your internship goes, remember to be always friendly, work hard and ask questions. Always ask questions. Hopefully you come away from your internship with as much as I did.
