Duration of internship and timings

5th July, 2015 – 1st August, 2015

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

Reached the firm around 10:00 AM. Met the head of the law firm first up and he introduced me to the associates working with the law firm. Following some more first day formalities, I was given some case files to read and was asked to explain what the cases were about, as briefly as possible.

The infrastructure of the firm was very good. The office had two floors and had 4 chambers, with each chamber containing a library.

Main tasks

The main tasks included researching case laws and making briefs on it. Was also given light drafting work: Drafting procession fees, section 138 of the negotiable instruments act, etc.

Another important task was taking dates for the next hearing.

Work environment and people

All the junior and senior Associates were very helpful, friendly, and approachable.

The work environment was pretty hectic. One really couldn’t complain of being given no work to do!!!!

Best things

The best thing about the internship experience is that i had a chance to learn a number of basic filing procedures. Many of us are awestruck by the glamour of argumentation, but we should also realise that drafting and filing skillsare equally important for a lawyer

Bad things

One thing in particular which I really didn’t like was the strike which took place at the Tis hazari court. The strike contributed to the further delay in court proceedings and backlog of cases, thus burdening an already overburdened judiciary.

Also, in a particular case, which I had the opportunity to witness, the defence attorney pleaded mercy for his client, on the ground that his client was paralyzed from the waist down. Shockingly enough, his client was standing pretty comfortably, on his own two legs, right next to the lawyer.

This incident left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, and felt like a mockery of the court.

No stipend

Biggest Lessons

The biggest lesson I learned from this particular internship experience is that one has to work really, really hard to earn even a single rupee in this profession.

As one of the Associates said to me in good humour,”In the legal profession, one has to run constantly to remain in the same place!”

Any Other Thing

Negotiating fees is a very tricky albeit important skill which every lawyer should be equipped with. One has to take care that the fees charged should be appropriate. Overcharging would be ethically wrong whereas undercharging would lead to undervaluation of your position as a lawyer.
