Duration of internship and timings
June – July 2015
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The introductory day was started at Jaipur. Brief introduction was given to us about the programme and campaign. A group of 3 interns was formed and was allocated to different blocks . Next day we headed to Nokha block of Bikaner District. Basic formalities was completed and on the first day we covered three Govt. Schools.
The main task was to file the RTIs as much as possible. The information sought in RTI was regarding the number of teachers and students, toilets, playgrounds, drinking water, school management committees and school development plan.
Apart from filing the RTIs, the Right of Education Act and the Right to Hearing Act was used to increase accountability and file grievances arising from the information sought.
This all followed by a ‘transparency and accountability’ yatra which go through each of the 33 districts of the state. That culminate with a State level Convention with resolutions that bring together the outcomes of the campaign.
Work environment and people
The environment was good. People were friendly and was always ready to help. From filing the RTI’s to gathering the masses they help us at every possible step.
There was so much to learn. Law in theoratical sense looks good but the ground reality is always different. We saw the caste system working there, the plights faced by the dalit communities and their childern.
The education level of the primary level kids. The whole ground reality was different and can be seen by only involving with them.
It was the life changing experience. You will learn how to manage with minimum resources and how to remain optimistic when you have nothing on your side.
Stay at Urmul Jyoti Bikaner ,an NGO run by urmul group. The stay was facilitated by the MKSS. There was no charges for the stay.
There was no exact timings. All depends on the location of the school. If the school is near the block area then you might free early. But if the schools were far away then it might consume the whole evening. Every evening we had to send the reports to the Rajasthan patrika, Newspaper.
