Internship Experience @ Chambers of Senior Advocate Sidharth Luthra, Supreme Court, Delhi: For a law student, nothing could have been better than this

Name, College, Year of Study

Harsh Singh, Dr. RML National Law University, Lucknow, 2nd Year.

Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength

Chambers of Senior Advocate Sidharth Luthra, Supreme Court, Delhi, 8-9 associates.

Application Process

I got the internship by contacts but you can mail your CVs to at least 3-4 months prior to your month of internship due to the rush of applicants.

Duration of Internship

3 weeks in the month of December.

First Impression and First Day Formalities

I was told to report at Luthra Sir’s chambers at 9 AM. I reached a bit before 9 and waited for the Secretary. She came after 5-10 minutes and saw me sitting there so she came and asked me my name and why was I sitting there, so I told her that I am an intern and I had to join today.

It was a Monday and Mondays are miscellaneous days in the Supreme Court where interns were not allowed but Luthra Sir had the Nirbhaya case lined up at 2 PM, which we were allowed to see.

The Secretary then asked me to get a Supreme Court pass made before the Nirbhaya case proceedings. I left the office at around 12 and got my pass made for the entire month. Listening to Sir arguing was a bliss. After this we went back to the chambers.

There were around 10-12 interns and all interns were under some associate or the other. I was not assigned to any associate on my first day. The infrastructure of the office was really nice.

There was a coffee machine, a room for interns, reception, associate’s room, a room for the clerical staff and then Luthra Sir’s conference room.

Main Task

We had to go to the Supreme Court daily and listen to Sir’s arguments. He would sometimes question us as to why we won or why did we lose, so we had to listen to him properly.

After coming back from court we had to read files for the next day, assist our associates in conference meetings with clients and do whatever work the associate gives. Normally, everyone stayed till 7 PM and then depending upon the work the interns used to leave the office.

Work Environment and People

It was quite a chill scene. The associates were nice and they used to joke around sometimes but the best person in the office was Luthra Sir himself. He is a very funny person with an amazing personality. He is the type of person you want to be in your 50s.

He had a very charming voice and used to interact daily with the interns. The Secretary, Raspreet Ma’am was also very sweet. She used to joke around with all the interns and the associates. The work environment was very nice. The co-interns were also very friendly and we used to chill sometimes or play games.

Best Things

As I said, the best thing about the internship was Luthra Sir himself. You just somehow fall in love with his personality. However, I consider myself to be very very lucky to be able to witness a case in Patiala House wherein Sir was against Mr. Ram Jethmalani.

For a law student, nothing could have been better than this. The conferences with clients were also very interesting. Sir used to sit in the middle and the clients used to tell him about their problems. He would also joke in between to lighten the atmosphere.

Also, Luthra Sir invited all the interns for a party at Hyatt Regency. It was so nice of him to do that.

Bad Things

Nothing as such.

No Stipend

Office Timings

Overall Rating

I would rate this experience of mine as an 8/10. I highly recommend everyone to do this internship. It is a very nice experience.
