Yashu Bansal, Chanakya National Law University, Patna, 1st year,

Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength

Legal Aid Services- West Bengal . Kolkata, 5 internees

Application Process

I had managed to get the mail id of the firm from a senior! (lack of ‘jacks’!).

The mail id is and (the earlier is the one more used frequently by them).

+ 91-33-2248 3980 is the office number! Too straight and easy a process!

Duration of internship and timings

4th December, 2013 to 20th January, 2014.( and it includes a 10 day leave for c’mas and new year! 🙂 )

The timings were very flexible. the office usually opened around 11:10 am and we would get to leave around 6 p.m. Less work or any event outside office were reasons to go home earlier. Saturday wasn’t an off but Sir used to leave us early.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The first day was my birthday! so it was pretty nice. less formalities, more learning and the best part is our Sir, Justice D.K.Basu gives personal attention to the internees and suggestions are most welcome!

On the first day, we were given easy cases to read and make a case report. The office looks like that of a lawyer. a reception area, the main hall for internees and typing and then Sir’s cabin. It has lots of books, journals and magazines. (Sir gifted me ‘GITANJALI’ as a farewell gift!)

Main tasks

I was given works like briefing case, making presentations, drafting memorandums and asked to study many acts and laws.

We were taken to the High Court, family court, civil court and Sir allowed the internees to become a part of a diploma course being held by LASWEB as well. We were also taken to a college function where me and a friend gave a speech on Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

The best experience was when we took up an arbitration case. Sir was present while me met the clients and prepared the case. It was an amazing experience!

Work environment and people

The work environment is friendly. the moment i can recall is when I gave suggestions to Sir’s PA while he was dating a girl online! :p
we used to have lunch with the other two ladies there who worked with LASWEB fulltime.

We also visited the other branch and that was very crowded in comparison to this one.

Best things

The best thing was the freedom to present your own views. Sir was very nice. polite, calm and helpful. (forgiving as well!) the co-internees were very friendly and the hour long lunch break was very filling.

The cheap street food made my days and lots of tea-at office and outside was the best happiness! I was satisfied with my first internship. It taught me new things and the advice given by Sir will always guide me.

Bad things

The only bad thing was the Kolkata Bus journeys!

Rest all were just perfect 🙂 Stipend none; but the experience is precious.

Biggest Lessons

The biggest lesson was that hard work is the key to success. Sir edited it and said “Hard and smart work is the key to success!”

Any Other Thing

The internship was a very nice experience and gave me the KICK to give me 100% to find the best internships and work harder in life.
