How big was the office? Team strength?
The main office where Justice Basu sits is at Karnani Estate.
It’s extremely professional and the office was cosy and decked with good books.
A wide array of law books was very helpful in legal research.
The team strength was good, around 7-8 people.
Application procedure. Internship contact details
The application procedure is quite simple wherein you send your CV and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org
Accommodation: how, where, how was it?
The office was at Karnani estate and I stayed nearby.
Its located near Park Circus.
The people at the office were very warm and receiving.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
Justice Basu personally calls interns and takes an interview.
He is extremely polite and very knowledgeable.
He might question interns on very basic questions of law.
First day at work was very nice, interns were given good amount of work.
We were given around 20 cases during the period of internship and we had to study and summarize the same.
Also, were taken to the Calcutta High Court, Family Court and Bankshall Court to watch the proceedings.
We also had a chance to observe techniques of cross examination.
There were a lot of interesting cases on family settlements, matrimonial disputes and so on. We got a chance to interact with several lawyers.
The seniors and all the people from staff were extremely cooperative and friendly and we could always approach them with our doubts.
I met a lot of clients , took notes while cases were discussed and also attended counseling sessions.
Sir would often advise us on cases and handling issues like confidentiality.
It was a brilliant first hand exposure regarding meeting clients and handling disputes.
Work environment, people
Work Environment was really good.
Peaceful and very interest generating.
Clients coming and going made us inquisitive as to what their cases were about.
The working staff was also extremely helpful.
Best things were when Sir, Justice Basu used to ask us to assist him in ADR (Alternate Dispute Resolution) sessions, talk to clients, help in drafting. Sessions with him are the most memorable till date.
Sometimes, the space crunch in the Karnani Estate office was annoying but later on we got used to it.
What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues
There is no dearth of places to hang around and chill ,and as always, the amazing street food in Kolkata makes it even more awesome!
Interns come from various colleges starting from NLSIU to CNLU. I had co- interns from HNLU and CNLU, they were a pleasure to work with.
No stipend is given.
Anything else you’d like to tell; Biggest lessons
It was a brilliant learning experience and I would highly recommend it for all aspiring Lawyers.
It would be an amazing start up for all as the advice, first hand exposure and involvement was invaluable.
The healthy environment greatly promoted learning and I would easily rate it as one of the best internships I’ve done so far.
