Internship @ Larsen & Toubro Limited, Corporate Legal Department, Mumbai : Good Work(Sheet); Free Breakfast and Lunch

Name of the organisation. City. Office Address. How was the office?

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) is an Indian multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai.

The company deals largely with engineering, construction, manufacturing goods, information technology and financial services.

L&T has a massive Campus on Saki Vihar Road, Powai which caters to all its departments.

The Corporate Legal Department is seated on the 3rd floor of North Block II in the Powai Campus.

Team Strength

The Corporate Legal Department at Larsen & Toubro comprised of a total of seven lawyers, each of whom specialized in different areas of law, headed by their Chief Legal Advisor – Mr. S.K. Bhatt.

Duration of Internship, Timings

10th October, 2012 – 31st October, 2012 (3 weeks)

I interned for a period 3 weeks; 6 days a week.

The office timings on weekdays is 8.25 am to 5.10 pm and from 8.25 am to 12.35 pm on Saturdays.

Application Procedure and Internship Contact Details

You should apply at least 4 months in advance with the exact dates.

L&T has a strict policy of keeping only one intern at a time so that the intern gets as much exposure as possible and the level of interaction between the intern and the team members is given utmost importance.

I got a call from the Legal Department within two weeks after mailing in my application. This was followed by a confirmation mail.

You will be required to intimate them a few days prior to your starting date in order to get certain specific details.

First impression, first day, formalities.

I was given a gate pass number which I was to convey to the security at the Gate on my first day, after which I was allowed to enter the campus.

North Block II is a glass building on the right hand side, if you walk straight from Gate No. 1.

I reached the office by 8:00 am on my first day. I was first introduced to Mr. S.K. Bhatt, the Chief Legal Advisor, and then I was taken to my cubicle space. It had a desktop, stationery and a few empty drawers which could be used to stack documents.

My performance during the period of my internship and at the end of it was to be evaluated, and hence to facilitate this exercise I would be required to maintain a worksheet on a daily basis.

This worksheet would contain the work allotted to me, the date and name of the person by whom the work was allotted and the date the work was completed on.

There were two main formalities to be completed on the very first day – my access card and a mess card. L&T provides its employees, interns and workmen with breakfast, lunch and tea/coffee. These were fairly easy to get done and not much running about was required.

Also, the Mess was diagonally across North Block hence there were less chances of getting lost in this rather enormous campus (yes, getting lost in here is pretty easy if you’re new).

Unlike what I had heard from a few of my seniors, I was given quite a lot of research work to do on my very first day at work. The impression L&T left on me on my first day was that it was professionalism personified.

Main Tasks

I was given both research work and I was asked to analyse/scrutinize various legal documents during my internship period.

My research work included mostly Contracts, Labour Laws and Trust.

I mainly researched on matters related to the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996, The Industries Act, 1951, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, Indian Partnership Act, 1932, The Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1951, The Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, The Indian Contract Act, 1872, The Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 & The Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

I also scrutinized various documents related to services for PI Upgrade, Software License Agreements and IT Services, Subscription Enterprise Agreements, ISDA Master Agreement, Schedule and other related documents and amendments, hedging currency and commodity risk, disclaimers and tenders.

Work environment & people

When I asked them as to why the interns did not have a deadline, I was told that the basic idea of an internship is to learn work and not to be tested if you can or cannot work.

The work environment was highly professional yet welcoming in nature. They were really helpful and each task given to me was precise and well-explained with all details required including the history, beforehand.

The most relaxing thing about this job apart from the timings was that there was no pressure of any deadline for the interns, until of course, the work was to be done immediately.

When I asked them as to why the interns did not have a deadline, I was told that the basic idea of an internship is to learn work and not to be tested if you can or cannot work.

The morning breakfast, lunch hour and evening snacks were the times you could interact properly with the executives.

The Best Things

1. The office timing was the best thing. Since office got over by 5 pm in the evening, I had enough time for myself.

2. The work environment was highly relaxed due to no deadline pressures. The intern could work at his own pace and complete the task given to him in due time.

3. The concept of the worksheet which was to be maintained would be really helpful for future internships.

The Bad Things

1. The work, after a certain point of time, due to the department dealing with dry subjects like Trust and Labour Laws, would get really monotonous.

2. Even though I really like the reason behind why they keep only one intern at a time, it gets hard to survive for a student with minimal interaction in the office.

The internship at L&T is strictly without any consideration.

However, food (breakfast, lunch and evening snacks) are taken care of.

Accommodation, etc

I was staying at Hiranandani in Powai with my relatives. I think it’s the nearest place to stay if you want to intern at L&T. Traveling hardly took me 10 minutes one way in an auto.

There are PGs available at Saki-Naka in Andheri East which is close enough to Powai. The nearest local stations to L&T are Vikhroli and Kanjur Marg. Students who’d like to intern here should be really careful about where they put up as the traveling part could kill your buzz, because it’s Mumbai.
