I had applied for the internship in the firm using the contact details given on Lawctopus. The former HR manager at the firm had left them and so the mails dont reach them. I had called them up and then got to informed them of my wish. The HR associate had asked me to mail the application along with my cv to the following mail specifying the time of internship: [email protected]

Duration of internship and timings

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The reply mail specifies at what date and time you should report at the office. The first day is the easy one. The HR manager would make you feel comfortable at the cubicle each and every intern is provided with. All the interns would also be allotted respective computers to work on.

Then the interns would then be taken around the office and introduced to the associates who would assign them work in course of the internship. Most interns remain workless during the day and it would be long. But it is only the first day that you get to be jobless.

Main tasks

Just as in any law firm the main tasks assigned here too is research work. There is a sections which concentrates on drafting. I had drafted quite a number of lease deeds and sale deeds. The people who are interested in drafting things could approach Ester ma’am.

People who are interested in IPR could approach the IPR team for work in that field. And lastly as any other corporate firm would offer there is a lot of due diligence and client query compilation works.

Work environment and people

All the associates and partners have a very friendly attitude towards the interns. Work speaks for the interns in the office. The amount of work you do at the end of the month depends on the way you handle the work previously assigned. Nobody in the office judges you by the college you study in or the place you come from. But given all this your genuine interest in the work would be under the scanner.

The golden rule of a legal internship is that you never say NO to any work assigned. The associates are all very much approachable and that solves most of the problems for the interns.

Best things

The best thing about the internship was the co interns. Hot tea and coffee would be served twice a day and if you feel the urge to have one at odd hours too you could get one from the pantry.

The work would not be a thing centric type. You would be able to touch through all the different kinds of work involved in corporate legal sector. And so the work would not be monotonous.

Saturdays are off. And normally they don’t ask the interns to come on the Saturdays.

Bad things

There would be a day or two when you are not involved in a lot of work and you would feel a bit bored about it. But some days would be long and you long for a day off.

You don’t get stipend at the end of the internship.

Biggest Lessons

There is always room for the one who is genuinely interested in the work. Kochhar is the best firm to intern under for a first experience in corporate firm.

Overall Rating



It is easy to find an accomodation in Chennai. I had stayed in a lodge in Mount Road. Single rooms for reasonable prices are easily available.

Office Timings

The office begins at 10 and the interns could leave by 5.30 pm. The timings are flexible given the work load. There have been days when I have left the office at 4.30 and there have been days when I have left it at 7.30 being the last man in the office. So the timings are mainly adjustable.
