You need to send your C.V to the HR incharge at well in advance (approx 3-4 months before the desired period of internship).

A constant follow up with the concerned person in the HR dept is also required.

Period of Internship:-

I had interned in the month of August and the internship timings were from 10:00 a.m to 7:30 p.m.

While I was interning in the TMT (Telecommunication, IT, Broadcasting) team there had been instances wherein I had to stay back till 11:00 p.m depending on the work load.

Moreover I at various instances I was entitled to take work at home, while receiving instructions over the phone and email even during weekends.

First Impression, First Day Formalities, Infrastructure:-

Khaitan & Co. in Delhi is located in Ashoka Estate at Barakhamba Road right in midst of the sprawling lawns of Lutyens Delhi and right next to Connaught Place.

The office has state of the art swanky infrastructure and is located on the 10th, 11th and 12th floor.

On the first day of internship all the new interns are made to sit in one of the conference rooms on the 12th floor and we were made to fill in some forms, made to read and sign the sexual harassment policy, then we were given badges having our name and college written on it which we were expected to wear each day to work.

Following the formalities we proceeded towards an induction and orientation programme whereafter we were assigned to our respective teams (Khaitan Delhi has several teams naming Lit team A, B, Corporate team, Real Estate, Tax, Competition, TMT to name a few) and were introduced to the Senior Partners, Partners, Associate partners, Principal Associates and Associates of our team.

Each intern is allotted a mentor, who is responsible for assigning work, memo submissions, practically everything related to the internship of an intern.

Khaitan & Co. in its Delhi office has excellent infrastructure having three floors state of the art office space spreading several thousend sq. ft.

The Litigation team (A&B) sits on the 10th floor, while all the other teams sit on the 11th floor and on the 12th floor are 12 conference rooms, a board room, a well stocked library.

A cafeteria serving gourmet food is located on the 11th floor while each floor has a kitchen/ pantry serving freshly brewed coffee and assorted cookies each evening !

The interns sit at the designated work stations for interns close to their designated teams, while couple interns of the litigation team(s) sit in the library.

Each intern is provided with a laptop which he/she is to collect and deposit from the IT team (after coming and before going).

Main tasks:-

I was interning with the TMT team, while I did receive work from the corporate, tax and litigation team.

Although my mentor used to give me plenty of work each day which used to consist of conducting due diligence, drafting notices, agreements etc. compiling TRAI tariff regulations, base regulations and conducting research with respect to TRAI tariff regime and other laws such as The Companies Act 2013& 1956, Contracts Act of 1872, Tort Laws, Civil Procedure Code of 1908, TRAI Act 1997, IT Act of 2000.

A day before the conclusion of our internship our mentors gave us a topic for which we were required to prepare a memo submission and mail it to the HR and our mentor, which is a basis for assessment of our internship.

Since I was associated with the TMT team, the topic of my memo submission was on the International Calling Card Services (Access Charge) Regulation, 2014.

Work Environment & People:-

Khaitan & Co. though being a mainstream and top law firm of our country has an excellent and friendly work environment where everyone is more than happy to help each other.

The interaction amongst fellow interns was also superbly friendly, at one instance while I was stuck in some due diligence work wherein expertise was required of the laws in Maharashtra, the Khaitan Mumbai office was more than happy to help me and guide me regarding the same quite promptly.

INR 5000

Biggest Lessons:-

1) Never say ‘No’ for any work which is to designated, even if inter team work is given as it sets a very negative impression.

2) Dress up formally and each intern is supposed to conduct himself/herself in a complete professional manner.

3) Build good public relations.

The entry was submitted for Summer Internship Experience Writing Competition organized by LexisNexis and Lawctopus. was the learning partner for the competition.
