I have done internship at VJ Mathew & Co. International law firm, H.O Cochin Kerala for a period of five weeks i.e. June- July 2015.
MY INTERNSHIPS BAGGED ME MY CAREER
My tenth and final internship was done in my final year at V J Mathew & Co. International Law Firm under the Sr. Adv. V J Mathew who represented and argued the landmark maritime case of MV Enrica Lexi otherwise known as the Italian Ship case.
I applied for 5 weeks summer internship in 2015 at their Cochin Office, only where they provide internships for law students.
It was a pleasant surprise that I received confirmation letter just 5 minutes past. They do have branches within and cross borders but are segregated away from the ambit of internships and training.
Sr. Adv. V J Mathew is a great personality who bags various international positions.
He is a designated Senior Advocate of the High Court of Kerala and also the Vice Chairman of Indian Maritime Law Association affiliated to Committee Maritime International. He is recently awarded with the title of “Maritime Icon of India”.
I shall proudly remark that this office has the best working ambiance with fully fledged infrastructure. In the very first day, I had sound interaction with Mathew sir and found to be a core motivator to all law students.
It is a well known fact that character speaks identity.
I was blessed with lot of interactions with many legends of law during my academic days but have never found any lawyer or academician boosting our tastes rather than imposing their views and experiences on law.
He is winged by two other partners, one his son Adv. Adarsh John Mathew and other Adv. Vipin P Varghese.
The time Schedule for internship is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday was given half day. Also it is very easy to get accommodation and transportation from the place where office is located.
On the very first day I was given to work on maritime disasters and legal frame work which was purely research oriented. I was assigned with lots of work by Adv. Vipin P Varghese and Adv. Rahul Miranda the then internship in charge.
All my works which was sent to respective associates were also reported to Mathew Sir. He makes thorough analysis of interns and even marked us for our behavioral approach at the office.
In the subsequent days I was fully equipped with drafting work such as drafting legal notice, instance report etc which was appreciated by him. Also it is a very key factor that all the associates have accommodated me and made homely.
He also provided me with court visits and allotted his valuable time for fruitful conversation specially focused on updates on that particular day. My work was well appreciated by all the partners and Mathew Sir.
On the third week of my internship the miracle happened. Mathew Sir offered me to the post of Associate at the same office. He added that he has checked all my works which made him to extend this offer. He also said that he checks the ability of all students interned at his office and offer accordingly.
I would like to suggest you this office but always note that interning here is fruitful especially when you are at your final pace of course. It is an excellent place to shape in your career if you are ready to put your efforts.
It is the only place where I have experienced a learning process of litigation being taught by the Senior Advocate. You may sometime burn with work but you are targeted to shape you as a dazzling star you can definitely make it.
My Suggestions to Budding Lawyers
Never curse yourself for not being a part of any National Law School across the country. Because once you determined to explore, you can definitely bring in fabulous opportunities that might not be even available in any of such dream schools.
The only thing you have to keep in mind is always ensure that you are in the right track and move forward with quick right decisions.
I assure you that the final result is the abandon knowledge that you have ingrained so far will be hired by various giant rulers of the law industry and you find your skills having a great demand in the market.
