Getting to work with them

Social work had always been a field of my interest. However opportunities to work for a social cause “virtually” are very limited. I was looking for some work opportunities online and came across virtual internship option posted by United Way of Chennai.

I immediately applied for the same by filling up the form, which required me to answer some basic questions. Within a week I received a call from the organization for a brief telephonic interview and the very next day they informed me that I had been shortlisted.

The work assigned to me was content and social media management.

Work Profile

United Way of Chennai has been the Charity partner of the Wipro Chennai Marathon which takes place every-year in the month of December in the city of Chennai where thousands of runners participate and help in raising funds for the initiatives of UWC in the areas of healthcare and education and rights of Children.

The idea was to encourage people to donate money for these causes along with participating in the Marathon. For this purpose they launched a massive online campaign Two months prior to the event, which was scheduled on the 7th of December.

I was in-charge of creating content for the e-mails, which was sent to different organizations and runner groups. In addition I was also creating the content for posters, which were put up on various social networking sites.

The task was also to write articles so as to motivate people to come forward to donate for a charitable purpose. In the process I read quotes on charity, created some of my own :p wrote interesting articles and also managed their Facebook page.

There were two other interns who were responsible for designing posters and digitizing content and I got to interact with them too. I also interacted with other employees of UWC and we had conference calls every weekend to discuss the progress of work.

After six weeks of effort when the D-Day arrived we were excited and nervous but the response received was overwhelming and the campaign was a great success. The amount collected in charity surpassed the previous years collection and the Wipro Chennai marathon was a roaring success.

Although it was a work-from-home internship but it did give me a lot of exposure and an enriching experience, which will stay with me for life

Best part: The feel of being part of an international event. Working for a cause, which could enlighten lives.

Worst part :None

Stipend: None.

Any other thing: After the event ended they sent a really nice certificate along with a letter of recommendation as an acknowledgement for my efforts.
