First Day Formalities and Initial Impressions

I was interning under Mr. P.C. Ghose, who was then dealing with cases related to banking laws. I gave him a call on the morning of my first day at work.

On reaching the office building, I was guided by the security to the first floor, where the Office is and then the receptionist helped me to reach Mr. Ghose’s office.

Mr. Ghose was very kind and welcoming, and patiently explained to me the kind of cases he was dealing with.

He introduced me to his P.A. and I was immediately escorted to the place where interns were supposed to work.

Main Work

I sat in a place wherein all other Partners’ interns did. Each of us was dealing with different kinds of cases and a variety of work, so it was a good learning experience as we helped each other out; it became a collective learning experience.

My main tasks were centered around research on Company Law and Banking Laws on the basis of different cases. I did around 12-15 case studies in the duration of my Internship, which widened my knowledge of the subjects concerned. It helped me a lot with research papers.

I visited the Calcutta High Court once or twice a week, and the Debt Recovery Tribunal as well.

My mentor, Mr. Ghose was always open to discussions, and every evening at 3:30 p.m., he would sit with me to discuss the day’s work and guide me further. All my queries and doubts were cleared by him very patiently.

Good Things

1) Supportive co-interns

2) Healthy working environment

3) Helpful advocates/seniors

4) Comfortable seating

5) Good places to eat nearby

6) Flexible work hours

Bad Things

1) No pay.

2) No computers or WiFi for interns. You have to arrange for it yourself.

Stipend

No.

Accommodation and Commute

The Royal Insurance Building, in which the Office is located is right across the General Post Office, which is a prime location that can be reached by means of public transport like buses and cabs.

The B.B.D. Bagh Mini-Bus stand is right next to the building, hardly a minute’s walk from the Royal Insurance Building entrance.

I am a resident of Kolkata so accommodation wasn’t an issue for me; however it not a residential area so the PGs etc. will be located at a slight distance.

Other Info

The biggest lesson I perhaps learned was that your productivity is not measured just by the time you spend at the office or simply at work. One has to be sincere and diligent.

To take a break, one may try the delicious street food available nearby alongside the pavement as you walk towards the office of the Calcutta Port Trust.
