Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength
Odisha Information Commission. (OIC)
I applied for the internship by sending my internship application and the college recommendation letter directly at the address of the office of the Secretary, OIC.
Address can be easily found from the OIC website.
A call at the OIC in addition to this would aid better.
Duration of internship and timings
I interned for a month in June which is the general duration for the OIC internship.
Internship timings were from 10:30 PM- 5:00 PM, six days a week.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
First impression of the organization was not that impressive due to lack of coordination in the OIC office and the internship authority.
Formalities included writing of the joining report and giving a copy of the CV.
We had a kind of formal discussion with the Registrar and Secretary of the commission regarding the practical utility and the diffrent facets of the RTI Act.
The OIC building is situated in Toshali Bhawan where, it shares its place with different other commissions like the Human Rights Commission, the state Women’s Commission and others.
Main tasks during the internship period included a detailed study of the RTI Act, 2005 and RTI Rules, 2006, attending the information commission’s courts, reading the files of the cases whose hearing we attended in the courts, scrutinizing of RTI files and making daily reports.
At the end of the internship, we were required to submit an internship report summarizing the work at the OIC.
Work environment and people
We were a group of 12 interns. Since I joined in the mid month, I got in touch with two groups of interns, so a total of around 20 of them.
All the co-interns were a bunch of enthusiastic people ready to work at the same time enjoy.
Work environment at the OIC was dull with hardly much work to do in comparison to the long working hours spent there.
Odisha Information Commission provides its interns with an amazing library consisting of books from different genre mostly belonging to legal field or independence stories or books by great writers like Nehru, Khushwant Singh and Tagore.
So that helped the interns utilize their time in a more fruitful manner.
As already said, the long time spent in the Information Commission office without much work to do made the internship redundant.
Even though the internship wasn’t that fascinating but now I definitely do have the RTI Act’s provisions at my finger tip.
The application procedure, the criterias and other such nuances of the Act are well learnt in the entire internship tenure.
By attending the RTI court, we got a practical knowledge of its working and utility. And of course there are other good books in the library to add to the knowledge base.
