How big was the office? Team strength?

The office is huge with various departments, there are various Information Commissioners and a Chief Information Commissioner who conduct the proceedings and apart from them there is a vast administrative unit as well, it is a typical governmental organization with numerous staff working under them.

Application procedure. Internship contact detail.

I got this internship through the Internship Committee of my college but one can acquire it personally as well by contacting Mr. Pankaj Shreyaskar, Director & Joint Registrar, Central Information Commission.

Contact – 011-26717354

Duration in weeks. No. of days/week. Timings

4 weeks. 5 days a week. Official timings are 9-5 but there is no strict timing for the interns but one must try to reach the office before 10 in the morning as the proceedings start 10 am onwards.

Accommodation: how, where, how was it?

I stayed in a PG at Green Park, South Ex. The place was quite near to the office and the metro station was just a turn away from the place, so it was very convenient.

There were many food joints nearby and hence made living there very easy. There are a lot of PGs in the Green Park Ext.

First impression. First day, formalities etc.

One is expected to wear formal attire during the period of internship. On the first day you will be briefed about the organization by the director of the organization, Mr. Pankaj Shreyaskar, afterwards the interns are allotted to different commissioners of the organization.

The interns under the Chief Information Commissioner does not get to meet him directly but are supposed to take the instructions from Mr.Bhalla (PA) who let you know about the cases going on and you will be given a bunch of application for which you will have to write Judgement.

You will be allowed to meet the commissioner only the next day.

Main tasks

The main task was to read the RTI application and make a brief of them; you will be told how to make these briefs beforehand, these briefs are produced in front of the Chief Commissioner who uses it during the proceedings of the day.

You get to attend the proceedings and get to learn a lot about the way RTI law works in India. When some very substantial case is being undertaken by the organization, you might be told to prepare a brief report over the same.

Work environment, people

Work environment is very learning and professional.

The Chief Commissioner during my period of internship; Mr. Satyananda Mishra, was a learned person and during the proceedings and after that often used to converse with the interns regarding their personal sphere to things like politics, religion, economics.

The administrative unit is pretty cooperating and always makes you feel at ease.

Best things?

The best thing was undoubtedly the time spent in the Chief’s office attending the proceedings, conversing with a person who has been through the real life working of law can often provide you with knowledge that hours of classroom learning doesn’t.

The second best thing was meeting the fine legal personalities like Mr. Prashant Bhushan and social activist Arvind Kejriwal in the commission for various cases.

You can always make good contacts. (Personal experience)

Superb internet connectivity with no sites blocked.

Wonderful food joints nearby.

No strict timing!

Bad things?

There is no metro station nearby the office, so you will have to take a bus or auto to reach the office which makes it inconvenient at times.

The delay in providing the certificates (Government office after all).

What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues

The interns are given a separate place to sit so you under no scrutiny from the officers and are pretty much free to do whatever you want. There are good food joints nearby like nirula and many local vendors – the kind that you find only in Delhi.

Stipend/ month

There is no stipend.

Anything else you’d like to tell

The Central Information Commission and RTI is a burning name in the political scenario of the country and you get to experience a lot about the various things happening in the political scenario in the nation.

During my internship, The CIC gave its decision regarding political parties being under the purview of RTI which caused a huge ripple in the political situation of the country and we got to know the personal opinions of the Chief Commissioner regarding the same.

One thing that was utterly thrilling during the internship were the praises we used to get form the Chief Commissioner whenever we used to make a good brief and then he used to copy our briefs and put it directly in the judgement, the satisfaction was beyond any other incentive.
