First Day Formalities, Infrastructure, First Impression

The dress code was formal, and due to frequent court visits, we had to wear black and white. On the first day since was my very first physical internship, I was very nervous. When I entered the office, an associate assigned me a desk, instructed me how to read a case file, and gave me a brief to read; then, I got called to the senior advocate’s room for orientation.

It’s a boutique law firm with around 10 associates, and all of them interacted with me on my first day, which gave me a positive impact and a feeling of friendly ambience.

Main Tasks

The primary tasks were to read case briefs, visit courts and type work. The case files given to me were to be read, analyzed and adequately summarised, along with a list of dates. I was also instructed to research judgments and understand the topics of the cases after every case brief reading.

During the first two weeks, I faced great difficulty understanding the whole legal research process, preparing arguments, court filing process. I was well assisted by my seniors whenever I asked for help. I was also asked many questions regarding the cases I was assisting to by all the associates, which helped me fill my thinking gaps to a great extent. I understood demand notices, rent agreements, FIR, bail applications, charge sheet, remand applications, petitions, written statements.

I regularly attended the City Sessions Court, Calcutta, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Calcutta, and Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Alipore. I also went to Conferences and met a few imminent criminal lawyers.

Lastly, everything I did was to be maintained in my internship Diary.

Work Environment

The workplace was decent. Books, Wi-Fi and beverages were adequately available. Everybody here was supportive and friendly, helped and guided me a lot.

The minimum limit is 4 weeks, and you can also get an extension based on your performance and vacancy.

I interned in this firm for 6 weeks, from 21st June 2021 to 30th July 2021. The timing of the firm was from 10 am to 5 pm.

Good Things

Best Things

The best thing about interning here was that people here were very humble and down to earth. I gained a lot of confidence and a sense of consistency after interning here.

There was an immense amount of learning and guidance. Also, they give many snacks there.

Certificate, Stipend, court visits, suitable working hours, exposure to litigation field and much practical knowledge.

Bad Things

Did not face anything bad.

Stipend (If Any)

Yes, Rs. 2000

Accommodation and Commute

I did not face much difficulty because the firm was not very far from my home. I would advise anyone looking for accommodation to get one near High Court, Calcutta, there are many PGs and hostels.

Anything Else?

This was my first internship, and I was terrified that I would be ignored a lot, but instead, It was the best experience of my law school life till now; I gained much experience above my expectations.

How the lower court works, the whole process of documentation of cases, arguments by advocates, orders, how the laws we study in the school are applied in real life.

I also learned that basic knowledge of the law is vital to understanding how the laws are applied. Have a basic understanding of all the bare acts like IPC, CRPC, CPC. Positively maintain your internship Diary; they checked it the last week. There is much running involved in courts; hence get good shoes.

The firm’s location is very convenient, so you can come running back in case of emergency restroom use.

  1. Adv. Kaushik De is truly inspiring and an erudite person. There are very few words which can speak about his kind nature. I’d say he is the kind of lawyer, our country needs. Truly selfless .

Out of the internships I have done, this place left like no less than an home. All associates friendly and forgiving. You truly learn something here, with work of all sorts entrusted, be it getting stamp paper to making a legal document and also participating in meetings.

To all those people who think doing business is better than service jobs, I’d suggest you to apply here.

  2. Stipend on a first internship that too for a 3rd yr student in a 5yr llb course !! Wow!!
