First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression
I was introduced to the senior and junior advocates of the firm.
My mentor was a junior advocate and she gave a brief regarding the various office rules and the kinds of work that would be allotted to me.
The firm primarily deals with labour cases, thus, visiting the labour court would be frequent.
If one has to pursue litigation as a career after the course.
This internship can be preferred for basic learning and understanding, practical aspects of the legal profession for practice.
This office building has a variety of books to read and study which is highly beneficial during legal research.
The office hours would be from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There would be a break during lunch time.
1. Legal research on fundamental rights, scope of Article 226 under Constitution of India;
2. Research on various provisions of the Indian Penal Code;
3. Drafted notes for arguments on issues related to various service matters and case law analysis under major labour legislations;
4. Attended High court and labour court proceedings;
5. Researched on the Payment of Gratuities Act,1972 and the Industrial Disputes Act,1947; and
6. Reading books at the law library of the office.
The office infrastructure was excellent, and the seniors were very helpful.
The work environment was pretty good. Everyone was focused on their work and it was very helpful.
They were ready to clear doubts and always provided proper insights on issues and pointed out mistakes.
I had to bring my own device for research purposes and was provided with proper internet connection.
We had a flexible schedule and had to submit projects before the deadline which taught me time management.
We had good interactive opportunities with experts from various fields and doubt clearing sessions after each session.
Hands-on experience watching both High court and labour court proceedings helped us understand the functioning of courts.
We were introduced to various acts and case laws and were taught to apply them in present cases.
We were taught the concepts of ratio decidendi and precedent and how to draft along with proper legal research.
This internship also strengthened my research skills as I was allotted mostly research-oriented work.
It proved to hone my writing skills as I wrote reports, analyzed case summaries, etc.
It helped in learning – drafting, legal research and miscellaneous documentation work.
Nothing as such. It was a good experience overall.
Details about accommodation and commute
As I reside about 30 minutes away from the firm I didn’t require accommodation but had to commute by bus or train.
Interning at Thomas and Thomas Advocates was an insightful experience.
As a first-year law student, I didn’t possess a lot of legal knowledge prior to this internship.
Our mentors were understanding of this fact and helped us understand difficult concepts.
We were given ample time to relax and focus.
The fellow advocates were very accommodating and this eased our tension as beginners.
They taught us to learn from our mistakes which were quite a few!
