How did you Apply?

I got to know about Sync Legal via LinkedIn and found the email id of the Firm in one of the posts of the Managing Partner, Adv. Prakhar Dixit. I forwarded my application for internship via email on June 23, 2019.

Next day, I received a call from the Firm and my interview was scheduled. Subsequently, I cleared the interview and was asked to join the Firm from July 1, 2019.

First-day Formalities, Infrastructure, First Impression

I reached the office sharp at 10 am. Though The Firm doesn’t have any formal joining procedure, The Managing Partner, Adv. Prakhar Dixit took a copy of my C. V. for records.

The Office has 2 rooms with one of them being a large Conference room, from where Adv. Dixit and the Associates and other Interns primarily carry out their work. The Office has a small but useful library.

Main Tasks

  • I reached the office by 10 am, followed by taking note of the cases whose hearings were due over the next few days.
  • I was involved in various activities including drafting of plaints/complaints and applications for a variety of cases (civil and criminal), downloading and preserving daily court orders (for cases dealt by the Firm), checking of cause lists, tracking of consignments, classification and assortment of documentary evidence, etc.
  • I also attend client meetings, therefore giving them quality exposure to client dealings.
  • On days of scheduled Court hearings, interns had to reach the concerned Court Complex by 9:50 am and examine the cause list outside the respective Court Room and subsequently, inform Adv. Dixit about the listing of the case of the Firm’s client.
  • Moreover, if Adv. Dixit or any other Advocate of the Firm was not able to reach the Court in time for the hearing, I had to appear before the Judge to take pass-overs or adjournments.
  • Other tasks entrusted included liaison with Court staff in order to file PF/RC, collection of certified copies of orders/judgments, getting dates (in case the concerned Judge was on leave on the date of hearing), etc.

Good Things

  • There are two-fold benefits for Law students interning at Sync Legal.
  • Firstly, interns get hands-on experience of drafting a variety of legal documents, including plaints and notices.
  • Secondly, interns get on ground exposure to Court practices.

Bad Things

The Office building has no lift. It was, therefore very difficult to climb two flight of stairs with a load of case files and books especially during the hot and humid months of July and August.

Although no stipend was paid, interns were given appropriate sums of money from time for conveyance and for work related to the Firm’s activities.

Accommodation and Commuting to the Office?

Being a local resident of Delhi, Delhi Metro was my main mode of commute. One needs to exit Rajiv Chowk Metro Station from Gate no. 5 and walk straight from the Metro Station for about a kilometre or so to reach the Office.

Anything else, what you did to chill out, lessons learnt etc. ?

At the Office, all interns used to have lunch together with the Managing Partner, Adv. Prakhar Dixit. We used to have wide-ranging discussions on a variety of topics on law and beyond. Sometimes, Adv. Dixit used to treat us by ordering food from leading fast-food chains. A cup of Tea and accompanying “Charcha” was standard everyday practice.

For someone undertaking his first law internship, an internship opportunity at Sync Legal was an enlightening experience. The internship enabled me to hone my drafting skills and gain first-hand litigation experience. Moreover, appearing before the Judges, (arguably the most enriching and yet the most challenging experience in course of the internship) has given me a new level of confidence to deal with the judicial apparatus of the country.

The internship allowed me to observe and learn, from close quarters, the gamut of tasks a lawyer specialising in litigation does during the course of his work. Further, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with legislation’s that I had not been exposed to during my first year at law school. In short, an internship with Sync Legal is highly recommended for a law student seeking practical exposure to Court litigation.
