HOW DID YOU APPLY?
I sent my application through the Career Development Cell of my institute. The application must have a cover letter, Statement of Purpose and the Curriculum Vitae. I received an email from Shri Raman K. Gaur, Sr. Consultant, NCPCR confirming my internship.
FIRST DAY FORMALITIES
On my first day, I was asked to report to the 5th floor of NCPCR where I was asked to write a joining letter. Thereby, every person present was allotted to different supervisors. I was allotted to Ms. Anshu Sharma, Consultant, Education. She briefed me about the Commission as a whole. My first task was to read the CPCR Act and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE).
Ma’am briefed me in great detail about certain sections in the RTE Act relating to physical and mental harassment of children, Capitation fee, Admission under EWS Category and provisions relating to children with disabilities. Ma’am told me that other than the RTE, there are certain state-centric rules which govern the working of educational institutions in India. She instructed me to go through the rules of some states.
She also advised me to go through the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 with its subsequent amendment in 2019.
Once in the Commission, you get to know that the Commission has a complaint side and a programme side.
Once a complaint is received in the Commission, it goes through various stages. The Commission’s task is to basically direct the requisite authority to take action in case of any violation of child rights.
So my main tasks included facilitating my supervisor in making Closure Reports, analysing ATRs coming from various authorities, writing letters and reminders to authorities. NITI Aayog has declared 117 districts in India as ‘aspirational districts’. NCPCR sets up benches there and hears complaints of child-rights violations directly from the complainants.
All the complaints received thereby are presented to the concerned authorities in the form of grids so as to ensure their speedy disposal. My task was to make those grids. I also segregated complaints based on the kind of violation involved.
The Commission also organises various workshops to make people aware of the rights of the child. I was also exposed to one of them.
Interning at NCPCR gives you a lot of exposure. The way each and every member of the Commission works relentlessly hard is truly inspiring. My then-Supervisor, Ms. Anshu Sharma holds a reservoir of knowledge and experience. She constantly supported me in every way possible. I just cannot be thankful enough.
There wasn’t any bad thing.
There’s no stipend.
ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT
You are required to arrange for your accommodation and transport yourself. I stayed at a P.G. in Central Delhi. The office is just a few metres away from the Janpath Metro Station (provided you exit from Gate No. 4).
Working in the Commission made me realise the dismal state in India with regard to compliance of rules pertaining to child rights (specifically in the education sector). I realised how pertinent it is for people to report against such violations. Overall, the experience was deeply insightful.
