Name Of The Organization And Address
District Legal Services Authority, Prayagraj
Duration Of Internship
March 17, 2021- April 07, 2021
The experience and exposure I gained from my Internship under the supervision of Mr. C.M Joshi, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Prayagraj, was very enriching. During the internship I learned about the organization, plethora of works it carried out, mainly in mediation proceedings, Lok Adalat, providing legal aid and compensations to victims under UP Victim Compensation Schemes, 2014 etc.
At first day of the internship Supervisor gave me brief about the organization and asks me to attend mediation proceedings primarily and take down the notes of it. Witnessing mediation proceedings is something which brings before you the folly of the society and at the same time make you aware of the reasons & rationale that can be effectively utilized for making such measures fruitful. While attending the mediation proceedings I got to learn about: basic etiquettes that are followed during the mediation proceedings, how the cases are filed and thereafter transferred for the mediation, rationale behind such transfer of cases (at initial stage) for the mediation. Further I came to know about the consequences that are followed in either of the cases; when the mediation was successful or when it was dismissed, how the parties to the proceedings affected by such consequences. Also I learned about the requirement of the observation period that was followed when the parties to the proceedings reach to the settlement and the repercussions in case settlement agreement not duly followed.
During the Internship they provide me with the responsibility to look after and contribute to the ongoing preparation of the upcoming Lok Adalat along with the other staff and lawyers of the DLSA office. Accordingly I worked in maintaining datasheets and looked after the notices that were required to be posted. They also required me to read previous reports and applications made for the legal aid for better understanding of the procedure of availing legal aid. Reading that and further by clarifying from supervisors and staff, I came to know about the prior requirement and complications in availing such aid and assistance.
The functioning of DLSA lies at the intersection of the law and society which is the same approach taught by our LL.M course. The mediation proceedings and the Lok Adalat, I observed, helped the parties in reaching a settlement in the initial or at pre litigation stage, amicably. Furthermore, it reduces the case loads and anxiety/tensions between the social beings thereby, deeply immersed in making progressive social change akin to what we need to focus in a Globalizing world.
Our Constitution requires the state shall endeavor to provide legal aid to the needy so that equal justice is made available to the poor and downtrodden, and DLSA aims to provide the legal aid services which sought fulfilling the spirit of the constitution. These different aspects of internship make me realize coherently as to how legal interventions can be utilized for bringing vibrant social cohort because if measures like mediation, legal aid, Lok Adalats are consistently embraced, they can bring substantial amount of change to our legal as well as social circumvention, thereby help us in attaining just, equitable, humane and sustainable society.
