Application Process with contact details
When we formed the team of 9 people we went to CLAP and met Purushottam Sir. He interacted with us, gave internship forms to fill up and deposit on the first day of internship and also asked to get an application signed by our Principal allowing us to intern at CLAP.
We did the needful and got the opportunity to intern there.
Duration of internship and timings
5th April, 2016- 20th April, 2016
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
CLAP had no hard and fast rule for wearing uniform and though the infrastructure isn’t that big, but things we learn there are worth it.
On the first day of internship we were given the liberty to choose our field of study and we chose Domestic Violence Act. Sir allotted us a room and gave us a book which comprised of domestic violence cases and other research materials of the Act. That book was a compilation of cases and research of all the members of CLAP.
Our main task was to study Domestic Violence Act in details and learn about the process. Sir used to ask us questions nearly daily and clear our doubts. He arranged our visit to Madhyam and Woman’s Police Station. Then at Madhyam we saw the practical aspect of domestic violence.
CLAP proved to be a place which taught us a separate practical aspect of life, how to deal it with as law students and how we can bring change.
Work environment and people
Office environment was quite good and the members were friendly and cooperative.
The best thing about the internship was the visit to Madhyam. Madhyam is a counseling center for domestic violence victims.
This act has proved to be guarding the rights of women and setting up Madhyam centers have proved to be the savior of many households.
Madhyam Centers are not found all over India. Only some places in India have started this concept.
We also read about cases of Domestic Violence.
The materials provided weren’t sufficient and due to few holidays during our internship period we couldn’t do enough field study.
This was an unpaid internship.
We got to know about the safeguard of women because of Domestic Violence Act but also got to know the cons of the Act.
One can be certain that there is something sinister about a law when it intimidates and instills fear in innocent people. When a person who has not committed a crime begins to fear punishment under the provisions of a law, it will certainly create panic amidst men.
The notable flaw in this law is that it lends itself to such easy misuse that women will find it hard to resist the temptation to teach a lesson to their male relatives and will file frivolous and false cases.
Internship at CLAP helped us view the practical aspect of the Domestic Violence Act with pros and cons.
Any Other Thing
1. While interacting with Soumya Madam, the Counselor, Madhyam, a case touched the hearts of the interns.
There was a case where a man and a woman were in a live-in relationship for the past 14 years. When they decided to get married were opposed by their family members. Then they came to Madhyam for rescue, both their family members were counseled and they are happily married couples now. As a token of thanks the couple visits Madhyam occasionally.
There are many other stories which tell the inspiring tales of proper execution of law.
2. Being the ex-interns of CLAP, a Legal Service Institute, we now have a Human Rights Law Student Community with other interns of the Institute and are ready to bring change in the society.
Since CLAP is in Cuttack and I am a day scholar I had no problem for accommodation.
2:00 pm- 5:00 pm
CLAP had given us the liberty to attend the internship after completing our classes at college.
