Chambers of Advocate Saurav Moitro, Calcutta High Court. He has his office in a building opposite to the High Court. The office is extremely small but my lawyer always made space for everyone who came to his chamber. This was quite fascinating for me.
Application Process with contact details
I knew him through a friend. So I called him and asked him if I could join him as an intern,
Duration of internship and timings
21st May, 2015 to 21st June, 2015
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The first day I entered his office I did not understand what to do. He was sitting there with his clients and there was literally no space left in the room. But somehow he managed to fit me in the room as well. I found this so fascinating that I could not react to whatever he asked me, for a moment.
The first day he dictated notes on the history Calcutta High Court and how it works. He also told me where to go to for ‘Xerox’ and the important court rooms. The first day was mostly about the place. The real work started from the second day.
The main task was to read cases and write case notes, case summaries, taking down dictation with regards to cases.
Another important thing that I did in the internship was court visits. I visited the High Court on a daily basis and listened to the court proceedings, took notes and prepared reports for my lawyer.
Work environment and people
Advocate Moitro is very helpful. He gives you a lot of independence to do your job. His office though small gives a very positive feeling. His junior lawyer is also very supportive. You can approach them with your problems and they will help in whatever way possible.
The court visits was the best part of the job. Roaming around the Court campus was such a good feeling. You learn so much just from roaming around the place. The court experience teaches you so much more than books and bare acts.
No bad things as such.
It is important that you are given independence to work in your way.
Your way can be the best way but it may not be my way of doing the job.
Every individual has to figure out their own way.
There should be deadlines but you should be given enough independence to work in that deadline. This not only increases your efficiency but also gives a purpose to your efforts.
He won’t provide for accommodation.
10 am to 5 pm. This was the office timing.
But the timings are flexible.
