About the organization
The NGO is based in Pune and deals with domestic violence cases and tries to reconcile the differences in marital relationships before taking the legal recourse.
Duration: 4 weeks ( November 2014)
One of the striking and most notable things was the prevalence of domestic violence in our society, as almost everyday there were four new cases.
The victims included a whole range from the lowest strata to the highly educated making it very clear that this is not a problem a select section of the society is actually suffering from.
My work actually comprised of listening to the grievances of the victims of domestic violence and observing the consultation and counseling sessions and at the same time take note of all the legal remedies which were resorted to if the counseling did not work out.
I also used to go to court with a lawyer at times who was appointed by the NGO and saw the proceedings of the court in divorce or domestic violence cases.
The internship being my first made me learn various legal issues and work ethics of which I was never aware.
Since the NGO worked in collaboration with the police station and was just above the police station all the cases regarding non-cordial domestic matters were first of all reported to the center which made it all the most intriguing as I got to know the present scenario of the household conditions prevailing in our society.
I also interacted with some of the victims of domestic violence and got to know the type of trauma they face and the agony they have to undergo during such time as and with no knowledge of legal remedies it is NGO such as these which provide them remedy free of cost that they finally get some relief.
My interaction with the perpetrators gave me an insight into their psychology and thinking process, which made me aware of the kind of education, and awareness we need in our society so as to bring about a real change.
Best thing: The best part of the internship was that the counselors with whom I worked told me all the technicalities and tricks of counseling and the lawyer explained me the legal aspects which made my first ever law school internship a wonderful learning experience.
