Internship Experience @ Advocate Suneet Kumar Gupta, Delhi: Got a chance to argue in court

Issued in public interest: We’ve received information that interns at this office have allegedly faced sexual harassment. Students/graduates are advised NOT to apply to this place.

Details: We have received 3 comments on the website alleging sexual harassment by Mr. Suneet Kumar Gupta. Out of the 3, we have spoken with 2 interns and confirmed the same. We also spoke with one other female intern. We have also gone through evidence sent by 2 lawyers (with whom the students subsequently interned after they left Suneet Kumar Gupta’s office) which is highly disturbing and confirms sexual harassment.

We are grateful to the lawyers and the interns for bringing this to our attention. Lawctopus is a website for law students and young lawyers and is read by nearly 2.5 lakh readers every month. It’s our duty to warn law students and young lawyers against interning or working at such unsafe places.

Name, College, Year:

Sudarshan Kumar, Chanakya National Law University Patna, Bihar, 2nd Year

Advocate Name, Location:

Mr. Suneet Kumar Gupta,  Advocate, Contact No:-+919811548282

Chamber No. 401 Lawyer’s Block Saket District Court, New Delhi.

Application Process with contact details:

You have to send your internship application, along with your CV at suneetguptaadv[at]

Duration of internship and timings:

1st  week of December  2018- 4th  week of December 2018.

Timings: 09:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

First impression, First day formalities, infrastructure:

Firstly, on the 1st day, I went there late by approx 1hr 30mins (i.e. 11 AM) as I have a bad habit of reaching at any internship place minimum 1 hour late as per the scheduled time.

Even here, I applied same and believe me, this is the last time when I forgot my habit as I have to reach at Sir’s Chamber by sharp 9:30 A.M as per the direction of Suneet Sir.

Then Sir introduced me to the associate-in-charge of the interns, Mr. Sunil Parsad, Advocate, who welcomed me. I was then made to fill a form and submit it, along with a couple of passport-size photos of mine, photocopy of ID card and Aadhar card.

Thereafter, I was made to sit with other interns, with whom I spent most of the time during the course of my internship. I then went to court with sir for a case and then some research work was given by sir.

Main tasks:

Main tasks are to visit various courts of Delhi for hearing and after completion of that, one has to brief about the case. Every intern is supposed to make daily details of work done by him/her.

Interns have also to re-write any judgment of any case as per their comfort and have to show it to Sir.

Work environment and people:

The work environment is really positive and that’s because of sir, who makes the interns feel good about coming to work. The staff is nice and kind and the associates are very humble and friendly.

This is the first internship where I felt very comfortable than any other place, as Suneet Sir and other associates like Ashutosh Sir, Sunil Sir, and Pramod Sir always gave respect to interns and never upset you whenever you approach them with any issue you have.

Suneet Sir and associates are always ready and willing to help interns in their work not only during the office hour but beyond office hours also via phone calls.

Sometimes they also have fun with interns and tend to make the atmosphere light and more comfortable than usual and sometimes serious discussion about the laws also take place.

Best things:

Apart from the positives that have been discussed so far, interns get to have a chance to express their views about any related case in the chamber, during which sir tends to discuss case details as well as political and current issues.

I also got an opportunity for the first time in my life to stand in front of Hon’ble judge and argue with them to pass over the matter and also sometimes to take next date.

Suneet  Sir sometimes calls interns to his table after completing his work, or when he is free from his work where the interns get the chance to interact with him and share their views.

Bad things:

There are no bad things as such for me, but I wish to inform everyone who wants to do an internship under Suneet Kumar Gupta Sir, be punctual and disciplined and you have to work there otherwise you won’t be able to Intern under Sir.

Biggest lessons:

Showing that you are passionate about the work, will make a lasting impression that could benefit you in the future when it comes to asking for a reference.

Internships can be a lot of fun, so relax, get to know the new people around you and enjoy yourself along with the internship.

  1. Even I faced some awful experiences during my period of internship under him. His all-time favourite topic to discuss was “Rape” and the details involved in the whole process of intercourse. he told me and my friend to be bold in order to survive in this profession and that it’s necessary to make contacts anyhow possible. He once even asked me if there is any kind of requirement in my body while discussing the rape thing. I was shocked and asked him in an angry tone that how is this anyhow related to the case? to which he replied whether my body has not gone any hormonal change during puberty as it is a basic human nature to feel in that way and if there is any requirement in our body then we should not feel shy at all but when I told him not to proceed with this discussion he asked me if I am exhausted and further asked me for a movie. this experience in itself and those instances still haunt me whenever I think of applying anywhere to intern. With a lot of courage, I am posting this comment so that nobody else would go through such trauma again!

  2. I along with a friend of mine from Law School, interned in the chambers of Mr. Suneet K. Gupta for a couple of days in the last week of January and I wish to bring to light the predatory tendencies of this man roaming around in the garb of a legal professional. It is after a lot of introspection and support from friends and family that I am putting this comment up in an attempt to ensure that no one else is subjected to the horrors that we have gone through.

The first couple of days were fine, as we had limited interaction with Mr. Suneet K. Gupta. We got to interact with him for the first time on the fourth day of our internship, when he called my friend and I in and asked us about our area of interest in law. We started off with a discussion on Murder and Culpable Homicide and he sought to explain the difference between them. Thereafter, the discussion took an ugly turn when he diverted to a discussion on rape with us and made extremely disturbing and derogatory remarks about rape victims. He further claimed that rape cases were filed by prostitutes only to extract money from men and there was no such thing as rape. However, as such regressive views are commonplace, we didn’t make much of it at that time. Interestingly, while he was discussing the same with us, his junior, stepped into the chamber and Mr. Suneet discreetly gestured that we would continue the discussion later on.

The following day, both of us were sent to various court-rooms to watch the proceedings and therefore, the day passed without any incident. Thereafter, on the last day, I was sent to the Family Court to observe proceedings whereas my friend was asked to stay back in the Chamber. When I came back to the Chamber, after finishing the work assigned to me, I saw Mr. Suneet Gupta engaged in a discussion with my friend. However, things did not seem normal to me as my friend appeared to be really scared.

He asked me to sit down and proceeded to indulge in extremely vulgar and shameful behavior, he kept on demanding a hug from me and said that there was nothing wrong in it. He also made vicious remarks about my appearance and indicated that since I was not as beautiful as my friend, I should not shy away from using my body as a means to succeed in this profession. Thereafter, he proceeded to cross all limits and insisted that I see pornography, which he had opened in his phone, he also told me that he wanted to see my reaction on watching the same and as to whether I would be ‘excited’ and would masturbate after watching it. By this time, I was in tears and literally pleaded with him to stop this harassment. I even reminded him that he had a daughter of my age! However, it had no effect on him and he continued to indulge in this disgraceful behavior and constantly asked me to hug him and other unmentionable things. Both of us were shocked by this disgraceful behavior and were too numb to respond. Finally, we managed to summon the courage to run from his chamber and discontinued the internship from the very next day.
As I don’t belong to Delhi, I do not have the means to pursue a Criminal Complaint against him. This incidence has taken a heavy toll on me and has severely affected my mental health and it will be a long time before I can recover from the trauma inflicted by this predator. However, I cannot in good conscience allow this predator to traumatise anyone else and therefore, after discussion with friends, family and other members of the fraternity, I, decided to put up this comment. Let this comment serve as a reminder to everyone that sexual predators are everywhere and it can even be someone who is a member of the fraternity who in the garb of accepting interns, finds his prey.

  3. How on earth did you get to argue as a law student? That’s illegal! Your Sir can be held in contempt!

    1. He didn’t get to argue, he only took a passover and mislabelled it as arguing.
