I approached Mrs. Gitaben Shroff. Currently I do not have her contact number.

Duration of Internship and timings

15th May, 2014 to 15th June, 2014

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

Mrs. Gitaben shroff had asked us to come to Umra Police Station (an urban police station in Surat) for the internship orientation.

We thought we would get to work there the entire month. It so turned out that a session was held for Police, counsellors and NGO workers in South Gujarat to inform them about an alarming issue.

We were shown a documentary made by Geeta ma’am and her team. It included the story of Neeta, a 7-year-old girl, who was raped by a stranger who would often give her biscuits.

The documentary provided preventive as well as remedial advises. Our task was to further help in the research and create awareness.

Main tasks

Conducting empirical research based on the guidance of the NGO workers, including VNSGU, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, located in Surat.

Work environment and people

Geeta ma’am had a lot of contacts, since she has been working since many years and also serves as a panel member for the Surat District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.

Collecting data, from police stations and the court was easy on account of the NGO’s reach.

Best things

Cooperative environment.

Bad things

Our travel expenses were a lot.

Biggest Lessons

Conducting empirical research is a tough task and it must be performed meticulously. It’s reporting also needs to be carried out as sensitively as the collection of data.

The NGO is in Surat, Gujarat so I stayed at my college hostel, outsiders have to manage their stay on their own.

Office Timings

Timings were flexible, given we had to finish assigned tasks within specific period of time.
