The Cross-Examination moot is organising its international moot competition 2022 and inviting registration for the same.
About the Organisers
The Cross-Examination Moot is the first ever competition on cross-examination in international arbitration. Shortly after being launched, it was recognized by Global Arbitration Review as the “Best Development” of the arbitration world in 2021.
The competition is organized with the support of Sciences Po, the New York University, Queen Mary University of London, and the National University of Singapore.
The Board of Directors is composed of renowned academics and practitioners from different regions around the world: Diego P. Fernández Arroyo, Yas Banifatemi, Eleonora Coelho, Gary Bell, Franco Ferrari, Samaa Haridi, Jean Kalicki, Loukas Mistelis, Alexis Mourre, and Sophie Nappert.
About the Cross Examination Moot
Every year, thousands of students participate in various existing arbitration moots around the world. These competitions have successfully trained generations of young lawyers on the basics of advocacy. The Cross-Examination Moot goes one step further.
Considering the importance of cross-examination for the arbitration profession and the fact that young lawyers are not exposed to its technics until very late in their careers, the Cross-Examination Moot has the purpose of educating the next generation of arbitration practitioners on the most challenging and exciting aspect of advocacy.
The Cross-Examination Moot is a competition for university teams with an exclusive focus on cross-examination techniques in international arbitration. Students will attend various rounds of hearings during which they will cross-examine each other’s witnesses and real quantum experts.
The mock case of the second edition focuses on the energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining industry, the policies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, and the fluctuating cryptocurrency markets in the context of an M&A transaction, as well as corruption allegations. The mock case was prepared by the International Chamber of Commerce, Compass Lexecon, and Dechert LLP.
The moot is an academic competition with a specific focus on cross-examination of witnesses in international arbitration. Its purpose is to foster the study and training of cross-examination techniques, including the understanding of the legal, factual, and technical issues addressed by witnesses and related procedural aspects. The moot is based on a mock case.
The 2022 mock case explores the intersections between the energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining industry, policies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, and the fluctuating cryptocurrency markets in the context of an M&A transaction, as well as corruption allegations. Students will have to cross-examine fact witnesses and economic experts.

The moot champion team, the runner-up team, and the best individual cross-examiner of the
moot will receive an award. All participants will receive a participation certificate.
