Hello, aspirants! Welcome to Lawctopus’ Judiciary Corner.

It’s no secret that local laws play a crucial role in the UP Judicial Services exam.

This is why we dedicate this article to discuss the importance of local laws and why it needs equal importance just like any other law subject.

Why are UP Local Laws Important?

When an aspirant begins preparing for the judiciary, the first thing they do is search- What to study, preparation strategies, and what not. Many like to watch interviews of people who successfully qualified for the UP Judicial Services. If you have done that, you must know how many candidates fail to qualify for one paper and the whole preparation goes down the drain.

What is that one paper?

It is none other than local laws.

Local Law is not a separate paper but comes under the Penal and Revenue laws. In the UP Judicial Services Exam, Penal and Revenue laws weigh about 200 marks, same as other law subjects. Not just in Mains but in Interviews as well, aspirants have been asked questions on local Uttar Pradesh Laws.

Still, they take this portion lightly by not making a strategy to prepare for the paper. Some even leave it for the last minute and end up failing the exam.

So be smart and start preparing for local laws from the very beginning. The goal of every aspirant should be to clear the exam and not the stages of the examination. If you focus on qualifying the stages of the examination, you will fall behind other aspirants in preparation and revision.

Even Rank 1 UP Judicial Services Exam 2018 Akanksha Tiwari mentioned in an interview that aspirants need to study for local laws from day one of the preparation to get the hang of the subject and not leave it for the end.

Preparation strategy to understand Local Laws

In UP Judicial Services, aspirants need to focus more on Revenue laws. This is the first strategy to clear this paper. There are two reasons for it. First, the syllabus of Revenue laws is vast as compared to penal laws. Second, Penal laws are of 50 marks.

However, it doesn’t mean that you neglect the Indian Penal Code. We just want you to focus more on one subject than the other. Otherwise, you won’t be able to finish the syllabus on time.

There are six laws under the revenue and local laws of 150 marks. These are:

  • The Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land reforms Act, 1951,
  • Uttar Pradesh, Urban Buildings (Regulation of Letting, Rent, and Eviction) Act, 1972,
  • Uttar Pradesh Municipalities Act,
  • U.P. Panchayat Raj Act,
  • U.P. Consolidation of Holding Act, 1953,
  • Uttar Pradesh Urban (Planning and Development) Act 1973, together with rules framed under the aforesaid Acts.

Aspirants can study each law for a whole week, make proper notes and revise continuously. Studying limited and revising unlimited is the Guru Mantra for successfully clearing the UP Judicial Services.

Books and Question Papers for UP Judicial Services

Speaking of books, it is no secret that no one can study every book ever written on revenue laws. Aspirants will need to devote 1-2 days to see which book offers them the best explanation of the section and also covers the syllabus. Keeping your sources limited will help during revision.

There are plenty of books aspirants can refer to prepare for Local Laws and Revenue. Books by authors such as R.R Maurya or Mohomad Taufiz Raza are excellent. (P.S. You can read our recommendations for the Best Books for UP Judiciary here.)
