Internship Experience @ Eastern Book Company (+ SCC Online), New Delhi: Become a pro at legal research

Good Lawyers know the Law; Great Lawyers know the Judges- SCC knows both!

Malvika Jain. Amity Law School, Noida. 4th Year.

Eastern Book Company, Connaught Place, New Delhi

The head office of the company is in Lucknow however it has branches in several other cities including New Delhi.

The New Delhi office is primarily the sales office but has a separate room for the Legal Team. The office is spread over two floors- 5th and 6th floor of the building.

The Sixth Floor of the office houses the “SCC Online Department”. The space given to the department is big enough to accommodate five people and consists of a small library in the adjacent conference room.

I interned at EBC for a month.

The process of calculating your contribution to the company is different at EBC as compared to other legal firms. Instead of the days that you’re working, the hours for each day are calculated.

Incase, you happen to skip the pre-defined number of hours, you’re required to compensate the same by working those extra number of hours.

The timings of the internship were 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. with half an hour lunch break.

Application procedure

There is no stipend provided for the internship. Though the experience gained in itself is no less than stipend. However, the interns are given 2-3 books of their choice at the end of their internship.

For the purpose of applying, applications are sent to the HR Department of the company at [email protected]. The applicants are short listed on the basis of merit.

The work environment at EBC was very welcoming and accommodating. The Supervisors I was working under were also very friendly.

In fact, given that I was the only intern at that time and the small area of the office, I had my lunch with the managers and supervisors themselves. This helped me learn a lot more than I could have only by working for them.

The supervisors don’t shun away your doubts or queries. They’re more than willing to always help you with any clarification you seek.

Also, working in the sales office had its own perks. I was introduced to the head trainer and the Director of the sales department, who trained me about SCC Online in detail starting from scratch.

Main Tasks

I was given a corner in the room where I used to work under direct supervision of Ms. Bhumika Indolia. She is the Assistant Editor at SCC Online.

Though the office is not very big in size, however, it proved quite advantageous for me, since I got the opportunity to work under direct scrutiny of Bhumika ma’am and she was there to guide and mentor me all the time.

Because EBC is into all three- Publishing, Online Blog and Web Edition, the versatility of tasks I got to do here could not have been possible anywhere else.

Apart from the usual case briefs (which you get to do in every law firm), I worked on the latest edition of their in-house publishing on environment law, prepared head notes and guide notes of the judgments for their web edition, prepared briefs on daily notifications published by the government, etc.

Since the World Book Fair happened to be during the dates of my Internship, I was lucky enough to have a one on one interaction with the Director of the Legal Department of the co., Mr. Sumeet Malik.

He explained various aspects of Legal Research, which we don’t realize in our routine searches.

Best Things

The best thing about the company is the close-knitted relations that all staff and the directors share. The atmosphere of the company is more like a family than colleagues and the Interns are treated at par with the employees.

The Directors and the supervisors or managers also don’t differentiate between the interns and the rest of the staff. Everyone shares the same rights and duties.

The managers and supervisors are so well equipped with the law because of the daily updates they make on the SCC Online Blog, the SCC Online Web Edition and their Weekly Digests with respect to all the Supreme Court judgments and other important judgments, notifications and orders, it was always a fruitful experience talking to them.

Bad Things

The only unwelcoming thing about the Internship was the infrastructure of the office. The office was not as lavish as you’d expect it to be. They had a tiny pantry, which did not offer very good coffee or tea, let alone something to eat.

Also, since the location of the office was such and only half an hour was allowed in the whole day as break for lunch, it was not feasible to get out to eat.

There was no provision of mid-day snacks in the form of sandwiches or Maggie, etc. so one had to carry all tit-bits to munch during the day.

All in all, it was one of the best internship experiences I had.

I would advise every law student seeking to apply at EBC to do the same in the first two years of their college itself since its better to have an insight into such an intense research system within the foremost years of your career.

All the best!
