Duration of Internship and timings
June 8 2016- June 28 2016
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The first impression was that of a typical government office. The infrastructure is not very sophisticated but is comfortable.
The first day you would be asked to register and meet the legal officer.
He will brief you about their work and you would be asked to buy a bare act for The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
The Commission receives several complaints which are recorded in files.
One has to read the files and make a summary of each case.
At the end of the internship all these have to be compiled in the form of a report which has to be submitted.
Sometimes lectures are given regarding the work of the commission and students are allowed to witness some of the proceedings.
Work environment and people
The work environment is very relaxed.
A lot can be learnt about the nature and the processing of complaints by the Human Rights Commission.
The officers do not take any initiative to help out the interns and if approached it is taken in a bad taste.
The process is very slow and needs to be changed soon.
Government offices are fine for the first year as it gives a fair exposure but from the second year onwards working under an advocate or joining a firm is advisable.
Any Other Thing
It is necessary to be fluent in spoken and written Hindi.
Stayed at my relatives’ place as my family is based there. However, Raipur has many options for PG and hostel, so that won’t be a problem.
10 am to 1 pm
The timings are quite relaxed you can leave a little earlier if you wish.
