I went to the chamber of the Late Justice himself and approached through phone.
Duration of Internship and timings
22nd February, 2016 – 8th March, 2016
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The first day was fantastic as the first day itself I met the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.
Though I was a bit nervous the people were friendly and helped me understand my duties and help me when there was any problem.
The infrastructure is great and awesome and we were allocated the chambers near Court number 7.
The whole place was filled with books, journals that held knowledge on varied number of things.
My main task was to do research on various cases assigned, assist the others in research and other tasks as well as attend court daily.
Work environment and people
The internship experience at the Chamber of Late Justice N Chaudhury is one I would never forget. I had learned a lot from the Late Justice.
He was a person who loved to impart his knowledge to us and teach us.
The work atmosphere was fantastic and there was none of the awkardness that generally resulted when working with Judges of a High Court. I loved interning there.
The thing that is most cherishable to me is the the discussions on various legal topics with the Late Justice.
The man was a treasure trove of knowledge with his experience in the legal field.
I learned a lot from these discussions with him.
He also had the habit of quoting Slokas and explaining them in context with a case.
It really was great to know his philosophies and learn from him.
The only bad thing I could find is that there was only parking for advocates and Judges but not for others. Well perhaps if we have been allowed to park too.
The biggest lesson I have learnt is that an adovcate must maintain his image. An advocated is expected to potray a certain image and to behave in a certain manner.
His image is the all he has and if his image was to fall in front of the Bench and his peers, it took a long time in regaining it, some never gained it again.
I live in a hostel near my college which is in Guwahati itself, so I commuted from my hostel.
The office timings are very strict. The Late Justice held regard for punctuality.
The office timings were from 9.30 a.m to 4.00 p.m
