The 4th Intellectual Property and Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Conference, which will take place virtually from February 9 to 12, 2022, is now accepting applications from academics and Ph.D. candidates interested in presenting at the conference. Interested candidates must submit their applications by December 10, 2021 to be considered.

About IPIRA

The IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Network is an initiative aimed at providing a forum for teachers and researchers studying and writing on Intellectual Property (IP) and Innovation related topics in and beyond Asia.

The mission of the IPIRA Network is

  • to facilitate the creation of a community of teachers and researchers by connecting them and providing opportunities for collaborations;
  • to assist researchers from Asia, and those interested in Asian Law, International Law, and Comparative Law to engage in research projects related to IP and Innovation topics;
  • to support and promote the research of young scholars in Asia and beyond;
  • to facilitate the collaboration between academics and researchers interested in IP and Innovation-related topics with international organizations, national governments, and NGOs in the region;
  • to promote policy-oriented discussion involving officials and stakeholders in Asia and beyond, with a focus on innovation, sustainable development, and economic growth.

The activities of the IPIRA Network include: the organization of the Annual IP & Innovation Researchers Asia (IPIRA) Conference in collaboration with universities in Asia and beyond Asia, and international organizations, as well as the facilitation of workshops on topics of national and regional interest.

About the IPIRA Conference

The 4th IPIRA Conference is organized by the IPIRA Network in cooperation with the WIPO Academy, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the following academic institutions:

  • International Islamic University Malaysia;
  • Universitas Indonesia;
  • Nanyang Technological University;
  • Texas A&M University; and
  • University of Geneva.

Call for Papers

Junior, mid-career and senior academics, alongside Ph.D. candidates interested in presenting their research are invited to apply by December 10, 2021.

Submissions are welcomed from legal scholars writing on IP and Innovation-related topics in Asian law, comparative law, and international law, as well as scholars interested in IP and Innovation from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.

Applications from students, including LL.M. students, will not be accepted as the Conference is reserved only for academics (full-time and part-time) and Ph.D. candidates.

Submission Guidelines

  • Researchers, including Ph.D. candidates, who are interested in presenting at the Fourth IPIRA Conference should email the following information to IPResearchersAsia@gmail.com
    • A title and a short abstract of the paper or work-in-progress (500 words or less) they would like to present as a Word.
    • The submission should be in English.
    • A short bio (200 words or less) including a recent picture, also as Word. 
    • Note: The applicants must be affiliatied with an academic institution to be accepted to the Conference.
  • Please indicate “Submission to the Fourth IPIRA Conference” in the email subject line.
  • There is no paper publication requirement to present at the Conference. Likewise, no publication of the papers presented is contemplated after the Fourth IPIRA Conference.

Important Dates

  • Deadline to submit a request to present: December 10, 2021 (*Early submissions are strongly encouraged.)
  • Notification of accepted participants: December 20, 2021
  • Deadline for confirmation for participation by accepted participants: December 30, 2021

Format and Time for Presentation

  • The IPIRA Conference will feature a combination of plenary and parallel sessions.
  • The final schedule will be based on the number of submissions.
  • The Organizers anticipate admitting a similar number of speakers as in the previous editions of the Conference.
  • Presenters will have approximately 25 minutes for their presentation including comments/questions from the audience.
  • The participants are to speak for no longer than 15 minutes, reserving a considerable amount of time for comments/questions.
  • All presenters are strongly encouraged to attend the whole Conference if possible.
  • As in previous editions, the 4th IPIRA Conference will feature keynote speakers and plenary panels with senior scholars and officials from international organizations.

Conference Schedule

  • 1st Day: Wednesday, 9 February 2022; A half day, starting in the early afternoon and ending in the evening (Asia time).
  • 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Day: Thursday, 10 February 2022; Friday, 11 February 2022; and Saturday 12 February 2022; Full days starting in the morning and continuing until the evening (Asia time).

Due to the Online format of the Conference, and the fact that participants will be in different time zones (within Asia and beyond), the Organizers will attempt to create a flexible and inclusive schedule to accommodate the majority of participants. The times of the Conference will be, however, primarily based on the time zones in Asia (at large).

Non-Presenting Attendees

  • The organizers welcome non-presenting attendees to attend the 4th IPIRA Conference on a space-available basis.
  • Considering the possibility of a high number of requests, early requests are strongly encouraged. The Conference organizers reserve the ability to limit the number of attendees due to the maximum capacity of the online Zoom system.

Registration Fee

There will be no registration fee or any other costs associated with attending the Fourth IPIRA Conference.

Technology and Mandatory Registration

  • Zoom will be the online platform for the Conference.
  • Each session will be conducted in a ‘classroom’ style, where all attendees are visible to each other and the speakers.
  • Presenters and attendees will be given a password to access the relevant sessions.
  • Attendance will be strictly reserved to registered presenters and attendees. Registration will be necessary to receive communications and information, including the Conference schedule.
  • All information will be processed in accordance with relevant data privacy laws.
