Discussing East West Street with Prof. Philippe Sands [May 14, 8 PM]- LLS Book Club

In the fourth month of Lawctopus Law School Book Club, we are reading ‘East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity’.

This is a non-fiction book which cuts across many genres. Written in an investigative journalistic style, the book covers the time leading up to the Nuremberg Trials through the lives of four characthers – Leon Buchholz, who is Prof. Sand’s grandfather; Hersch Lauterpacht, who developed the theory of crimes against humanity; Rafael Lemkin who developed the theory of genocide; and, Hans Frank, Hitler’s personal lawyer.

And to discuss the book, we have a meeting with Prof. Philippe Sands.

Prof. Philippe Sands is one of the leading authorities on International Law. He is a Queen’s Counsel and is currently the President of English PEN. He has appeared before various international tribunals and has advised numerous States as well.

This book club is part of Lawctopus Law School. Here we read books related to “law” and discuss them. When we finish the book, we call over a guest to discuss the book with.

Till now we’ve read ‘A People’s Constitution’ by Dr. Rohit De and discussed the book with Dr. De himself (video here). In the second month, we had Mr. TG Shenoy over to discuss ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress’ by Robert Heinlein (video here). Then we read two books by Ms. Sunetra Choudhury. And finally this book, ‘East West Street’.
