Though the Committee publishes the Annual Magazine of a law college, it strives to cater to a much wider audience and attempts to develop not only the legal acumen of students, but also their creative and literary skills and talents.
It does so, interalia, by organizing the BELLES-LETTRES J.E. Dastur Memorial Government Law College Short Fiction Essay Writing Competition every year.
The competition is sponsored in the memory of Mr. Jal E. Dastur, a practicing Chartered Accountant and a member of both the Indian and the English Institutes and the sole proprietor of the firm M/s E. J. Dastur & Co.
Now in its seventh year, the competition is increasing in popularity and prestige with every passing year. Students of educational institutions from all parts of the country come forward and exhibit their literary as well as analytical skills.
The competition has seen the likes of famous authors such as Gregory Roberts, Ruskin Bond, Ashwin Sanghi and Sidin Vadukut as judges over the years.
The winners are awarded cash prizes as follows:
First prize: 12,000
Second Prize: 9,000
