Amnesty International India Apprenticeships 2017: Apply by April 2; Stipend of Rs. 15,000/Month



Amnesty International India is offering apprenticeships in the following teams for the year 2017, all the positions are based out of our Bangalore office except the Media position, which is based out of our Delhi office.

This program is designed for individuals interested in gaining experience working with a human rights organization, in different capacities.

We are especially interested in candidates from Dalit or Adivasi communities, persons with disabilities and members of religious minorities groups who can contribute through their experience to the diversity and effectiveness of our workplace.


Apart from the scope of work outlined below, apprentices will have an opportunity to learn more about the work that Amnesty does, and contribute their own skills and knowledge to the organization.


The Human Rights Defenders team works to support and empower grassroots activists who work on critical human rights issues. The project also runs campaigns to protect the rights of Human Rights Defenders at risk of arbitrary arrest, detention, and other abuses.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the production of a video documentary on the Human Rights Defenders project
  • Design and printing of two publications on legal and media related issues
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluation of the project

Candidate requirements:

  • Good communicator
  • Basic Hindi
  • Good coordination skills

The Rapid Response team makes real-time interventions (through media campaigning and advocacy) where gross human rights abuses have been committed either by State or non-state actors by investigating facts and working with civil society and grassroots partners.

The project particularly focuses on the most marginalized communities in India, who are often targeted with punitive and repressive laws to curb their freedom of expression or their work for the community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Verification of facts from the ground on reported or under-reported human rights abuses
  • Drafting/translation of press releases or blogs in Hindi or any relevant regional language
  • Archival research work
  • Field work as and when required (data collection, interviews etc.)
  • Media campaigning using a range of tactics to put pressure on relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and international human rights standards
  • Campaign work to raise and support global issues in the international movement

Candidate requirements:

  • Basic English or Hindi
  • Strong regional language proficiency (both written and verbal)
  • Strong grassroots journalism, media or documentation skills

The Human Rights Education Programme envisions to create a rights-respecting society by promoting the values and principles of human rights in communities through formal education systems, with a special focus on children and young people.

This Programme focuses a) to build knowledge and skills of young people to take action on human rights and b) to integrate HRE policy in the formal educational institutions.

Position purpose:

Human Rights Education Programme at Amnesty International India is seeking a Research Intern (Apprentice) to work on Amnesty International India’s Status Report on the policies and implementation of Human Rights Education in India.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct research based on secondary data and analyze the status of human rights education in India.
  • Assist on policy analysis on HRE and various strategies adapted by State and Non-State actors.
  • Develop a database of civil society organizations and National/State Human Rights institutions, Academic institutions and other stakeholders who work on HRE in India.
  • To complete a Status Report on the policies and implementation of Human Rights Education in India.

Candidate Requirements

  • Research experience and skills.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, and self-motivated.
  • Written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge and understanding of education system in India (optional)

The women’s rights team works to defend women’s human rights in India through community-based programmes, campaigns and advocacy.

The goal of our project ‘Ready to Report’ is to ensure survivors who choose to report sexual violence can do so safely, with dignity, with increased accountability from authorities and with participation from the community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organise and participate in community-level meetings on issues of sexual violence
  • Assisting with any primary or secondary research that the team is carrying out on issues of sexual violence
  • Assisting with preparing of reports and documentation
  • Monitoring media reports and assisting with campaigns

Candidate requirements:

  • Basic English and Kannada
  • Experience/interest in campaigning for women’s rights issues
  • Good documentation skills

* This position is based in the New Delhi office and starts in May 2017

The Media team works to promote Amnesty International India’s main findings and recommendations in the external world. The team’s primary task is to bring human rights issues into the public arena through engaging closely with the national and regional media.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building networks with national and regional media especially Hindi media.
  • Supporting the media work requirements of all Amnesty India projects.
  • Scanning the media for spotting opportunities to promote human rights issues.
  • Drafting responses to media queries; drafting press releases and other media outputs.

Candidate requirements:

  • Background in media or communications work.
  • Multimedia skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Hindi including the ability to draft press releases and official communication.
  • Good networks in national and state-based Hindi media (print, electronic & digital).

The two member, Human Resources (HR) department, oversees the various aspects of employment, such as the implementation of policies, compliance with labor law and employment standards, administration of employee benefits and recruitment, employee engagement activities etc.

Responsibilities include:

  • Posting advertisements
  • Arranging interviews
  • Creating employment contracts
  • Responding to email applications and vacancy queries
  • Setting up new staff
  • Assisting with the setup of new email accounts
  • Organizing staff documents
  • Assisting with payroll
  • Keeping contact information up to date for all staff
  • Updating the recruitment overview spreadsheet

Candidate requirements:

  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel & Word
  • Basic English
  • Attention to detail
  • Duration: Fixed-term for 3 months
  • Start date: April 17, 2017
  • Location: Bangalore for all positions except Media, which is in Delhi.
  • Remuneration: 15,000 per month
