Alternative Law Forum’s 2 Day Course on Gender, Sexuality and the Law [Bangalore] | Batch 1: June 13, 14 | Batch 2: July 4, 5

What is the link between a millenia old religious text and a colonial penal provision?

How can the law break the binary of gender?

What is the difference between sex work and trafficking and why is it important to draw the distinction?

The connecting thread between these questions is the law’s regulation of sex and sexuality, including sexual and gender non-conformity.

The present legal scenario is an exercise in contradiction: where “deviant” sexual acts are criminalized on the one hand and the government has expressed strong support for a comprehensive transgender rights law on the other.

While the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2013 has expanded our understanding of what constitutes sexual assault, marital rape continues to be an exception. These contradictions are indicative of how questions of permissibility, tradition and deviance affect how the law perceives sex and sexuality.

This inaugural course conducted by the Alternative Law Forum aims to equip participants witha basic understanding of core debates in the law relating to gender and sexuality. The lectureswill include an examination of the legal scheme relating to criminalization of homosexuality, the emerging protections for transgender rights, provisions relating to sex work and debatesaround sexual violence.

We envision the course to be of particular interest to students, researchers, activists and anyone interested in contemporary debates around gender andsexuality in India.
