school for democracy access to justice democracy and constitutional values fellowship for lawyers

School for Democracy is inviting applications for their Democracy and Constitutional Values Fellowship Program lawyers to create a network of rural lawyers from marginalised communities in Rajasthan.

About School for Democracy

The School for Democracy (SFD) or Loktantrashala is a non-formal educational institution dedicated to promoting and deepening democratic education and learning in India. It is conceived as a space that will enable eclectic groups of adult learners from diverse social and educational backgrounds to learn about the theory and practice of a functioning democracy.

About the Fellowship

This fellowship opportunity is a call for applications for a lawyer/s from historically marginalised communities who are interested in the institutions of the delivery of justice, especially in rural India.

The applicant will work in selected parts of rural Rajasthan at a trial court level, on a full-time basis. The cluster will aim to build a network of lawyers in rural Rajasthan – mainly belonging to Dalit, Adivasi, women, nomadic, and minority communities.

Through the fellows, the cluster aims to continuously engage with rural trial court lawyers, to build upon their experience, and build a network to foster constitutional values in the pursuit of justice. Through this network, there will also be an attempt to help remove barriers to access to justice for the marginalised communities themselves.

The fellows will be based in Rajasthan, and will be expected to travel regularly for about 12-15 days a month to build a network and to help organise meetings along with four other fellows and a coordinator.

The fellows will also be encouraged to do pro bono, or legal aid work for the rest of the month in a rural/trial court of their choice.

This fellowship is linked to the Constitutional Values Fellowship, run by the School for Democracy.
